Most fighters don’t have their post-fight celebratory speeches pre-planned, but Benson Henderson (pictured) wanted to take advantage of his access to a live primetime television audience.
After squeaking out a highly controversial split decision victory over Gilbert Melendez Saturday to retain his UFC lightweight title, Henderson got on one knee and proposed to girlfriend Maria Magana.
To the surprise of nobody, she said yes.
Unfortunately for the newly engaged couple, the proposal was somewhat tainted because the crowd inside HP Pavilion in San Jose, California was still raining down boos from the judges’ (48-17, 47-48, 48-47) verdict.
Judge Derek Clearey gave Henderson the final three rounds, while Michael Bell handed him the middle three frames. Wade Vierra awarded Melendez with the first, fourth and fifth stanzas.
Their back-and-forth affair was very difficult to score. A couple of the rounds could have gone in either direction, so disappointment is understandable. However, outrage might be a bit of a stretch.
Although, an immediate rematch is a possibility.
Henderson has now won seven straight scraps, with the last four being of the championship variety.
No word on when Ben and Maria will have their big day.
