Roy Nelson not only knocked Cheick Kongo (pictured) unconscious last Saturday at UFC 159, but he has also knocked Kongo out of the UFC.
Rumors started circulating Kongo was issued his walking papers when his profile was deleted from UFC.com, typically a telltale sign that a fighter has been sent to the unemployment line. On Wednesday afternoon, Kongo’s sponsor confirmed his firing.
“I am sad to report that [Cheick] Kongo was released by the UFC today,” Alden Halpern of MMA Elite tweeted.
Kongo owns a 18-8-2 professional record, but has dropped two of his past three scraps. Both of the defeats came in devastating (T)KO fashion.
The heavyweight went 11-6-1 during his seven-year run inside the Octagon.
The soon-to-be 38-year-old kickboxer never fought for a UFC title.
(UPDATED 5/1/13 at 1:21PM PT):
A UFC official has confirmed with 5thRound.com that Kongo’s contract expired following his fight with Nelson. The promotion has decided not to re-sign him at this time.
