According to MMAFighting, a cut above Costa Philippou’s (pictured) eye has forced the middleweight out of his critical shootout against former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.

UFC on FX 8 takes place May 18 inside Jaragua Arena in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil. With just two weeks remaining until showtime, it’s unknown whether the promotion will scour its roster for a last-minute substitute or shelf Jacare for another day.

The 185-pound affair was slated to co-headline the festivities.

Philippou has been quietly, yet violently, making his way up the 185-pound totem pole by winning his last six bouts. He was most recently seen posting a TKO victory over Tim Boetsch at UFC 155.

Jacare was looking to make his UFC debut in front of his Brazilian brethren. The 33-year-old is perfect in his past three outings.

A middleweight brawl between Vitor Belfort and Luke Rockhold serves as the night’s featured attraction.
