‘UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Bigfoot II’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

UFC Poster 160 Velasquez Bigfoot Dos Santos Hunt

“UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Bigfoot II” took place Saturday inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. 

A heavyweight title tilt between champion Cain Velasquez and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva headlined the festivities. Former champ Junior dos Santos and veteran Mark Hunt served as the co-main event.

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Jeremy Stephens Defeats Estevan Payan via Unanimous Decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27)

1stRound: Payan takes an accidental kick to the groin and time is called. He rocks Stephens with a big right hand. Payan attempts an arm-in guillotine, but Stephens escapes and ends up in top position. Payan lands an upkick and scrambles to his feet. Payan is bleeding heavily from his forehead, not quite sure when that happened. Stephens eats several strikes in the clinch and has blood running down his face. Stephens wobbles him with a solid right. 

5thRound scores it: Stephens, 10-9

2ndRound: Stephens immediately clocks him with a right punch. He plants Payan on his back and is working some nice ground-and-pound.  Stephens takes his back and is firing off shots from behind. The canvas is covered in blood, mainly Payan’s.

5thRound scores it: Stephens, 10-9

3rdRound: Stephens clobbers him with a head kick. He drags Payan to the ground and is smothering him. This is pretty bloody, and lopsided. Stephens continues his onslaught until the final bell. They are both covered in blood.

5thRound scores it: Stephens, 10-9, sweeping the cards, 30-27

George Roop Defeats Brian Bowles via TKO (Punches) at 1:43 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Roop starts things off with a front kick to the body. And follows up with a knee to the stomach. Bowles wobbles him with a vicious right hand. Roop really establishing his range. Bowles drops him with a right and pounces. He slaps on a guillotine choke. Bowles transitions to a mounted guillotine.

5thRound scores it: Bowles, 10-9

2ndRound: Roop has recovered from the shot he ate earlier. He floors Bowles with a solid left and goes in for the kill. Roop is giving him the business. It’s a wrap.

Stephen Thompson Defeats Nah-shon Burrell via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: Thompson charges forward and has him clinched against the cage. Burrell is unloading several knees to the midsection while in the clinch. They have been clinching for over four minutes and the crowd is getting restless. They finally separate. Thompson nails him with a left hook. He drags Barrell to the canvas for a brief moment.

5thRound scores it: Thompson, 10-9

2ndRound: Thompson scores with a hook to the body. He has Burrell clinched against the fence again. Burrell eats a one-two combo. Not the most thrilling scrap the Octagon has ever hosted… Burrell lands a left, but eats a right in return.

5thRound scores it: Thompson, 10-9

3rdRound: Burrell connects with an overhand right. He’s coming out with a much greater sense of urgency. Thompson is clearly gassed, but he might have enough in the tank to ride home a decision. Burrell needs to turn up the heat.

5thRound scores it: Burrell, 10-9, but likely loses, 29-28.


Khabib Nurmagomedov Defeats Abel Trujillo via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: Trujillo is winging serious leather, but hasn’t landed anything yet. He scores a takedown, though Nurmagomedov grabs his arm and is working a submission. Trujillo escapes. Nurmagomedov gets a hold of his back and is tossing his opponent around. Trujillo finally scrambles free and ends up in top position. Nurmagomedov tries a triangle from off his back. He’s now inverted. Back to conventional and it’s tight. Nurmagomedov runs out of time.

5thRound scores it: Nurmagomedov, 10-9

2ndRound: Nurmagomedov tripped him to the mat for a split second. Trujillo comes up firing. He may have clipped him with a right hand. Nurmagomedov definitely clocked him with a right. He takes Trujillo’s back again. Nurmagomedov is thoroughly out-grappling him.

5thRound scores it: Nurmagomedov, 10-9

3rdRound: Trujillo needs a finish. Nurmagomedov drags him to the mat within a minute. Now he’s draped on Trujillo’s back again. This is the epitome of getting ragdolled. Crowd booing for some reason, hopefully they’re not displeased with Nurmagomedov. It’s certainly not his fault. Trujillo has clearly given up.

5thRound scores it: Nurmagomedov, 10-9, and easily runs the table, 30-27

Robert Whittaker Defeats Colton Smith via TKO (Punches) at :41 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Whittaker stuffs a takedown attempt. Not too much action in this frame, keeping with the trend of this fight card thus far. Whittaker really working the job, Smith answers with a right. He drops Whittaker and pounces. Smith tried a kimura to no avail.

5thRound scores it: Smith, 10-9

2ndRound: Smith a little sloppy and gets tagged with a left hook. He’s still on skates. Smith fires back with a right. He seems to have recovered. Whittaker still doesn’t see the right hand coming for some reason. Whittaker scrambles out of a takedown attempt. Smith knees him in the groin and time is called. Game on. Whittaker clocks him with two unanswered left hooks. He’s starting to find his groove. Smith’s face is bloodied up. Whittaker is unleashing a flurry.

5thRound scores it: Whittaker, 10-9

3rdRound: Smith carelessly charges forward and eats a left hook. Whittaker is bringing the pain. Game. Set. Match, Whittaker.

Dennis Bermudez Defeats Max Holloway via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Holloway doing a good job of using his reach advantage. Nothing too devastating from either fighter. Bermudez is having a tough time closing the distance. Bermudez has him clinched against the cage looking for a takedown. Holloway clocks him in the face with a spinning back kick. He’s opening it up now. 

5thRound scores it: Holloway, 10-9

2ndRound: Holloway kicks him in the face. Bermudez just seems a step low tonight. Great combo by Holloway. Bermudez nearly takes his legs out with a kick. Holloway’s hands look sharp. Bermudez picks him up and drops him on the mat.

5thRound scores it: Holloway, 10-9

3rdRound: Bermudez’s effort hasn’t waned, but he’s getting outclassed by the UFC’s youngest fighter. Bermudez finally scores a takedown and is unloading some heavy shots. One minute remaining.

5thRound scores it: Bermudez, 10-9, but Holloway should have won, 29-28

Mike Pyle Defeats Rick Story via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Pyle lands a knee to the midsection, but gets taken down for his troubles. Story a tad sloppy with his ground attack and nearly gets caught in an armbar. They get to their feet. Story is going to town on his body with lethal punches. Story floors him with a violent left hook. He follows him tot he mat and is laying the lumber.

5thRound score sit: Story, 10-9

2ndRound: Seems like Pyle has recovered from the onslaught. Story takes him down, but gets caught in an kimura on the way down. Story escapes and is in top position. Crowd not too pleased with Story’s ground attack.

3rdRound: Standup battle through two minutes, though nothing significant has landed for either welterweight. Pyle tags him with a standing elbow. And another. Story counters with a hook to the body. Story’s face is a bloody mess. He looks gassed. Pyle had a minute to capitalize, but he gets taken down. Pyle reverses and takes his back.

5thRound scores it: Pyle, 10-9, but probably lost, 29-28

Main Card:

Donald Cerrone Defeats KJ Noons via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

1stRound: Noons comes out firing off kicks. Cerrone catches him in the dome with a knee. Cerrone starting to put in work with his kicks. He trips Noons up for a brief moment. Cerrone scores with a nice combination.

5thRound scores it: Cerrone, 10-9

2ndRound: Cerrone doing a solid job of keeping his opponent at the end of his punches. Noons connects with a right hand. And some shots to the body. Noons appears to be gassing. Fierce exchange where both guys landed heavy strikes. Spinning back fist by Noons. Cerrone easily takes him down. Good ground work by “Cowboy.”

5thRound scores it: Cerrone, 10-9

3rdRound: They trade leg kicks. Noons carelessly moves forward and gets planets on his back with over three minutes left. That should about do it. Cerrone is targeting the cut on Noons’ right eye with countless elbows. Noons is a bloody mess.

5thRound scores it: Cerrone, 10-9, and easily takes it, 30-27

TJ Grant Defeats Gray Maynard via TKO (Punches) at 2:07 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Maynard tags him with a right hand. Grant counters with a right hook of his own. He rocks Maynard with a right. And another body shot. Grant floors him with a straight right and is bringing the pain. What an onslaught. That’s all she wrote.

Glover Teixeira Defeats James Te Huna via Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 2:38 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Teixeira is supposed to have the more dangerous hands, but Te Huna is landing good combos in the pocket. Teixeira secures a takedown. They get to their feet, though Teixeira drops for an arm-in guillotine. Te Huna is forced to cry uncle.

Junior dos Santos Defeats Mark Hunt via KO (Head Kick) at 4:18 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Thunderous leg kick by Hunt to start things off. He follows up with a left jab. Monstrous overhand right floors Hunt. He’s back to his feet and appears to have recovered. Hunt’s got a crazy chin. One-two combo by dos Santos. Some blood around dos Santos’ right eye. Dos Santos lands another vicious overhand right.

5thRound scores it: dos Santos, 10-9

2ndRound: Hunt scores with a left hook. Good body shot by Hunt. Dos Santos clocks him with another overhand right. He follows up with a stunning left jab. Dos Santos starting work his jab. Hunt clobbers him with a big right punch. Dos Santos takes him down, much to the crowd’s dismay. He advances to side control.

5thRound scores it: dos Santos, 10-9

3rdRound: Hunt needs a finish, and he’s still in it as long as dos Santos chooses to keep this standing. The Brazilian can get this to the mat whenever he wants. Half the round over and nothing significant has landed for either heavyweight. Hunt continues to throw haymakers, but he just can’t close the distance. Dos Santos clobbers him with a left hook. Dos Santos puts him to sleep with a spinning heel kick. One more punch on the ground to seal the deal. That kick came out of nowhere. Crazy to see a heavyweight pull that off.

Cain Velasquez Defeats Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva via TKO (Punches) at 1:21 in the 1stRound (Velasquez retains UFC heavyweight title)

1stRound: Velasquez immediately shoots for a single-leg takedown and gets denied. Big leg kick by Velasquez. The champ catches him coming in with a straight right. After several bombs on the canvas, referee Mario Yamasaki brings the mauling to an end. Silva protested the stoppage, however it appeared to be a good call.
