Most believed former UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos punched his top contender ticket when he knocked out Mark Hunt on Saturday with a spinning heel kick. UFC president Dana White subsequently confirmed during the UFC 160 post-fight press conference that dos Santos will in fact face current champion Cain Velasquez for a third time.
“No brainer,” White said of arranging Velasquez vs. dos Santos 3. “If there was ever a trilogy, that’s it right there. You look at the way both fights went: Junior destroys him in the first fight, Cain destroys him in the second fight, I can’t wait to see the third fight.
“They both looked awesome tonight. They’re the two best heavyweights in the world. That’s the fight.”
Velasquez solidified his status as the planet’s baddest 265-pounder by mauling Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva for the second time in 364 days in Saturday’s main event. Dos Santos took center stage the bout prior and showcased his expanding repertoire by putting Hunt to sleep with the impromptu highlight reel strike.
It took dos Santos all of 64 seconds to take Velasquez’s strap from him in their November 2011 encounter. Velasquez returned the favor by posting a lopsided unanimous decision victory in December to reclaim his throne.
White has no idea when or where Part III will go down. He hinted it’s possible the trilogy could headline the launch of Fox Sports 1 on August 17. However, don’t bank on the blockbuster bout being offered on free TV.
