The rumors are true, semi-retired UFC welterweight Nick Diaz (pictured) is in fact launching a mixed martial arts organization of his own. On Wednesday, WAR Mixed Martial Arts announced it will make its promotional debut June 22 inside Stockton Arena in Stockton, California.
Team Cesar Gracie fighter Daniel Roberts battles Justin Baesman in the show’s featured attraction.
The other five fights reported include WEC veteran Antonio Banuelos vs. Benny Vinson, Caleb Mitchell vs. Evan Esguerra, former UFC heavyweight Roy Boughton vs. Liron Wilson, Mike Persons vs. Clayton McKinney and Darin Cooley vs. Cody Gibson.
Bouts in WAR will be fought under the Unified Rules of MMA, modified to use a ring instead of a cage and disallowing elbow strikes to a grounded opponent. Regular matches will be three, five minute rounds, and future championship bouts will five, five minute rounds.
Tickets go on sale May 29th at 10AM PT. The event will stream live on NickDiazPromotions.com beginning at 8PM ET/ 5PM PT.
Diaz owns a 26-9 (1 NC) professional record. He was last seen dropping a convincing unanimous decision defeat to reigning UFC welterweight king Georges St-Pierre in March. The 29-year-old somewhat announced his retirement immediately after the loss, but he’s done that before and come back.
