Their request is the UFC’s command. Light heavyweight king Jon Jones (pictured) will defend his crown against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 in Toronto.
The promotion confirmed the September 21 shootout Thursday afternoon. Air Canada Centre will host the festivities.
The 205-pounders have been exchanging pleasantries on Twitter for the past several weeks. Gustafsson kicked things off when he and his team released a Harlem Shake video that featured his friends holding up signs that read ”Jon Jones You Are Next.”
“Bones” is arguably MMA’s most unstoppable force. The 25-year-old has won nine consecutive fights en route to securing his spot atop the throne. Jones is currently recovering from the dislocated big left toe he suffered against Sonnen.
Gustafsson was slated to fight Gegard Mousasi in April, but was pulled at the 11th hour after suffering a gash underneath his left eyebrow. The Swede has rattled off six straight wins, with his most recent coming in December’s thrashing over former champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
No other stamps have been reported for the show at this time.
