If this was Roy Nelson’s final fight inside the Octagon, it certainly was not the way “Big Country” envisioned leaving the planet’s premier mixed martial arts promotion.
Nelson was thoroughly outstruck by Stipe Miocic (pictured) at UFC 161. He was rocked several times and appeared winded midway through the opening round.
When it was all said and done, Nelson dropped a lopsided (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) unanimous decision defeat.
Nelson had the opportunity to ink an extension with the UFC prior to facing Miocic, but decided to decline thinking a win would give him greater negotiating power at the table. It will be interesting to see how this plays out considering Nelson and UFC president Dana White have never hidden their disdain for one another.
MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Canada hosted Saturday’s show.
