Dana White (pictured) and he’s pissed, so you better quit with the inappropriate jokes.
As expected, the UFC president is none too pleased with Chael Sonnen for the crack he made about Rihanna this week while appearing as an analyst on “Fox Sports 1 Live.”
While discussing Floyd Mayweather’s boxing match against Canelo Alvarez, Sonnen inexplicably decided to reference the 2009 beatdown Rihanna received from then-boyfriend Chris Brown.
“Look, Floyd needs to keep doing what he’s doing, which is fighting complete tomato cans who we’ve never heard of before,” Sonnen stated. “I’ve never seen anybody in the history of America get so rich and so famous off of having complete wimps throwing punch at their faces.
“I know what you’re saying. You’re saying, ‘Well, it’s happened before, what about Rihanna?’ Shame on you. Classless. I will not stand for it. Too soon? Was it too soon?”
Fox Sports 1 immediately went into damage control and issued an apology for Sonnen’s insensitive comment. White promptly backed the UFC’s broadcast partners and admitted Uncle Chael put his foot in his mouth.
“First of all, the joke wasn’t that funny,” White said during Thursday’s UFC 165 media gathering in Toronto. “He’s not a comedian, and you can’t make fun of domestic violence or any other thing. He’s a sports commentator and he’s got to knock that s*** off. He’s got to stop. He’s got to stop or it’s not going to be good.
“Chael needs to stop the comedy and do what he’s on that show to do. He’s great at it. He’s super talented. Leave the jokes to the comedians.”
In addition to wreaking havoc inside the Octagon, Sonnen serves as weekly co-host on “UFC Tonight,” which also airs on Fox Sports 1. The network loves Sonnen and his brash persona so much, they asked him to make cameos on “Fox Sports 1 Live.”
