‘UFC on FOX: Johnson vs. Moraga’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

“UFC on FOX: Johnson vs. Moraga” took place Saturday inside KeyArena in Seattle, Washington. 

Flyweight king Demetrious Johnson defended his crown against John Moraga in the show’s main attraction. Up-and-coming welterweights Jake Ellenberger and Rory MacDonald met in the co-main event.

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Yaotzin Meza Defeats John Albert via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 2:49 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Meza secures an early takedown. Albert uses a guillotine choke to escape and take top position. Albert slaps on an armbar attempt. He rolls over and is now belly-down trying to finish things. Meza wiggles his arm free. Meza scrambles to full mount and tries a guillotine. Close round to score.

5thRound scores it: Meza, 10-9.

2ndRound: Albert lands a thunderous leg kick. They fall to the ground after a scramble and Albert attempts a triangle choke from off his back. Meza is doing a great job of fending him off. Albert just gives up the choke, he looks gassed. Meza takes his back and locks in a rear-naked choke. It’s a wrap.

Albert was unable to lose the one extra pound he was over at weigh-ins. Perhaps that factored into his gas tank tonight.

Justin Salas Defeats Aaron Riley via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Salas lands a couple of solid leg kicks early. Riley is a tad careless with his attack and gets taken down briefly. Salas doing a solid job of diversifying his strikes. Riley scores with a one-two combo. Salas’ right eye is starting to swell. Riley thwarts a takedown attempt. Salas kicks him in the face.

5thRound scores it: Salas, 10-9.

2ndRound: Riley continues to take he center of the Octagon and is pressing the action. However, Salas is getting the better of the standup battle thus far. Riley’s nose is bleeding like crazy. Salas connects with  flurry.

5thRound scores it: Salas, 10-9.

3rdRound: Riley comes out firing as if he’s down 0-2 in rounds, which is good because he is. Riley takes a finger to the eye and time is called. Game on. Nasty leg kick by Riley. He follows up with a huge head kick the brings the crowd to its feet. Only 30 seconds remaining.

5thRound scores it: Riley, 10-9, but likely lost, 29-28.


Germaine de Randamie Defeats Julie Kedzie via Split Decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: de Randamie wobbles her with a strike and pounces. de Randamie is dominating the action with her Thai clinch, landing knees and kicks. Kedzie is still standing, but it looks like she’s overmatched in this scrap.

5thRound scores it: de Randamie, 10-9.

2ndRound: Kedzie is going to have to find a way to close the distance, but that reach is crazy – especially when de Randamie uses kicks. Kedzie lands a kick and follows up with an uppercut. Kedzie secures a much-needed takedown and has half the round to work. Kedzie not doing much of anything on the canvas. She’ll probably win the frame because she was in dominant position, though did next to nothing on top.

5thRound scores it: Kedzie, 10-9.

3rdRound: They collide in the center of the and battle in the clinch. After a crazy scramble, de Randamie has her pressed against the fence. They separate. This fight is up for grabs halfway through the final stanza. de Randamie clocks her with a right. de Randamie lands a leg kick, but Kedzie trips her up and lands on top. This will be interesting to see how the judges score this.

5thRound scores it: de Randamie, 10-9, and should run the table, 30-27.

Ed Herman Defeats Trevor Smith via Split Decision (30-27, 27-30, 29-28)

1stRound: Herman lands a left, but his opponent walks right through it and has him clinched against the cage. Herman is clocking him with uppercuts in the clinch, Smith responds with a couple of knees to the stomach. They separate and rock each other with some bombs. Smith clobbers him with two unanswered punches. Someone should tell these guys it’s OK to block punches with something besides their faces.

5thRound scores it: Smith, 10-9.

2ndRound: Herman drops him with a head kick and pounces. Smith gets to his feet, but eats another kick on the way up. Smith lands another big right. They are trading heavy shots. After a wild scramble, Herman ends up in top position. Tight one to score.

5thRound scores it: Herman, 10-9.

3rdRound: Smith tags him with a left hook and follows up with a leg kick. Herman eats another powerful right. Herman shoots and almost gets caught in a guillotine choke on the way down. He escapes and is going for an arm triangle choke from full mount. Smith fights free. Smith lands a kick to the groin and time is called. Game on. Smith connects with a left hook. Hermain fails on a takedown. He’s landing some uppercuts in the clinch. Smith answers with knees to the body. Herman eats two punches before the final horn. 

5thRound scores it: Smith, 10-9, and probably won, 29-28.

Daron Cruickshank Defeats Yves Edwards via Split Decision (30-27, 27-30, 30-27)

1stRound: Cruickshank starts things off with a head kick. Edwards answers with a head kick of his own. Edwards scores with a one-two combo. Not much going on inside the cage for the past two minutes.

5thRound scores it: Edwards, 10-9.

2ndRound: Edwards has dictated much of the action thus far. They are active with their strikes, but nothing significant landing for either fighter. Cruickshank gets him with a kick to the body.

5thRound scores it: Edwards, 10-9.

3rdRound: Edwards charges forward and tags him with a one-two combo. He follows up with a leg kick. Not the most thrilling scrap the Octagon has ever hosted. Cruickshank continues to work his kicks. The crowd boos as the final horn sounds.

5thRound scores it: Cruickshank, 10-9, but probably lost, 29-28.

Melvin Guillard Defeats Mac Danzig via KO (Punches) at 2:47 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Nice overhand right by Guillard. Danzig eats a stiff right jab. Guillard’s hands are looking sharp early. Danzig has had enough and tries to initiate the clinch. Guillard shoves him off. Guillard kicks him in body.

5thRound scores it: Guillard, 10-9.

2ndRound: Danzig gets a hold of his back, but Guillard just tosses him aside. Guillard wobbles him with a right. Guillard floors him with a nasty left and goes in for the kill. Several hammer fists on the ground and Danzig is unconscious on the canvas.

Danny Castillo Defeats Tim Means via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Castillo gets him down in under a minute. Castillo unloading several big elbows. Means gets to his feet, but gets slammed right back down. Castillo is smothering him on the mat.

5thRound scores it: Castillo, 10-9.

2ndRound: Means stuffs a takedown attempt and lands a knee to the grill. The crowd is getting antsy. Castillo trips him to the ground. Means tries to get back up, but Castillo is draped all over him.

5thRound scores it: Castillo, 10-9.

3rdRound: Means finally scores his first significant strikes, a knee to the face in the clinch and two straight punches. Castillo answers with a left hook. Means wobbles him with a knee to the midsection. Castillo gets a body lock and finally manages to trip him to the mat. Means reverses and takes side control.

5thRound scores it: Means, 10-9, but lost, 29-28.

Jorge Masvidal Defeats Michael Chiesa via Submission (D’arce Choke) at 4:59 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Chiesa immediately goes for a takedown and gets it. Masvidal quickly fights to his feet and has him clinched against the cage. Chiesa separates and drops him with a left. He’s going for the kill on the mat. Chiesa tried slap on a guillotine choke, but Masvidal gets loose and kicks Chiesa in the midsection. Chiesa connects one a one-two combo. Masvidal tags him with a right hook.

5thRound scores it: Chiesa, 10-9.

2ndRound: Chiesa gets a double-leg takedown, but gets caught in a guillotine choke. It looked tight, though Chiesa managed to slide out. Masvidal clocks him with a combo as they get to their feet. Masvidal catches a kick and lands on top. Masvidal nails him with a knee to the ribs. He’s giving Chiesa the business on the mat. Masvidal locks in a D’arce choke. Chiesa taps just before the horn blares. Chiesa quickly leaves the Octagon in disgust. I understand the disappointment, but that’s poor sportsmanship, buddy.

Main Card:


Liz Carmouche Defeats Jessica Andrade via TKO (Strikes) at 3:57 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Carmouche has her clinched against the cage and slams her to the mat. She quickly advances to side control. Andrade gets to her feet, but gets tripped right back down. Andrade picks her opponent up and slams her down. Andrade now tries an arm-in guillotine.

5thRound scores it: Andrade, 10-9.

2ndRound: Carmouche instantly scores a takedown. She advances to full mount and is laying the lumber. Carmouche now takes her back. She slaps on a rear-naked choke, but Andrade manages to roll out. Carmouche is unleashing some vicious elbows. This is gonna get stopped pretty soon. And there you have it.

Robbie Lawler Defeats Bobby Voelker via KO (Head Kick) at :24 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Lawlwer easily drags him to the mat. Voelker goes to his feet, but is still taking shots in the clinch. Voelker’s face is bloodied up. They are both looking to hit a home run. Lawler has a significant speed advantage. Standing elbow by Lawler. Voelker eats a vicious kick to the midsection.

5thRound scores it: Lawler, 10-9.

2ndRound: Lawler drops him with a head kick and follows up with one punch on the canvas. That’s all she wrote.

Rory MacDonald Defeats Jake Ellenberger via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

1stRound: Outside of an early stiff jab by MacDonald, there hasn’t been anything to write about in the opening three minutes. A lot of feeling out between the two in this critical welterweight affair. A couple more quick jabs by MacDonald. Crowd boos as the horn sounds.

5thRound scores it: MacDonald, 10-9.

2ndRound: MacDonald continues to pelt him with his long left jab. Ellenberger having issues closing the distance. He looks very hesitant, too. Ellenberger shoots, but lets to and nails him with an uppercut on the way out. MacDonald’s takedown attempt gets stuffed. Crowd really unhappy and letting the fighters hear it.

5thRound scores it: MacDonald, 10-9.

3rdRound: MacDonald will thank his left jab when this scrap is over, because outside of that, there is nothing else going on. Quite a letdown of a fight… Ellenberger needs to go for broke at this point. The crowd has booed the entire round so far. Ellenberger scores a takedown with a minute left.

5thRound scores it: MacDonald, 10-9, and should have swept the cards, 30-27.

Demetrious Johnson Defeats John Moraga via Submission (Armbar) at 3:43 in the 5thRound (UFC flyweight champion)

1stRound: Herb Dean is the third man inside the Octagon. Moraga is not hesitant, so the bright lights clearly didn’t get to him. Big leg kicks by the challenger. Right hook by Johnson. Johnson secures a double-leg takedown and ends up in side control. “Mighty Mouse” slaps on a guillotine choke right before the bell sounds.

5thRound scores it: Johnson, 10-9.

2ndRound: Johnson promptly takes down his overzealous challenger. He advances to side control. Johnson going for a kimura. He now takes Moraga’s back. Moraga is simply getting outclassed. Moraga gets to his feet. Moraga was a Division 1 all-American wrestler, but Johnson is taking him down at will.

5thRound scores it: Johnson, 10-9.

3rdRound: Johnson scores another takedown. He moves to side control, now takes his back. Moraga gets to his feet, but is taken right back down. Johnson looking for a kimura again. Moraga escapes. He finally puts Johnson on his back, though for a brief second.

5thRound scores it: Johnson, 10-9.

4thRound: Moraga lands a leg kick, but Johnson makes him pay with another takedown. Moraga gets to his feet. He might be losing badly, but at least he came to fight. Johnson puts him on his back again. Moraga back to his feet, lands a big right hand that hits Johnson on the nose, then gets taken down. Johnson is bleeding from his nose.

5thRound scores it: Johnson, 10-9.

5thRound: Johnson has Moraga looking up at the lights again. Carbon copy of the prior four rounds. Johnson going for another kimura. He quickly switches to an armbar. Moraga is trying to fend him off, but is forced to tap before something snaps.
