It is being reported that top UFC lightweight competitors Kenny Florian and Joe Stevenson are going to square off at a UFC event on November 15th. The event is rumored to be taking place somewhere in the state of Oregon. It is believed that the event will be numbered UFC 91, and it should be the last promotion until their New Year’s Eve event on December 27th.MMAWeekly.com has confirmed with sources close to both fighters that both have accepted the fight and contracts are pending.
Florian is coming off what many believed to be a top contender bout victory against Roger Huerta at UFC 87 earlier this month. However, because reigning lightweight champion BJ Penn has pushed the UFC to put him in a rematch against UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, Florian would be left on the sidelines for at least another nine months if he waited for Penn.
It is rumored that if the GSP/Penn welterweight rematch were to take place, it would be at the UFC’s biggest event of the year on New Year’s Eve weekend.
Immediately after his victory over Huerta, Florian knew that Penn would be moving up to the 170-pound division and that he would be left with the choice of either waiting for Penn, or fighting someone else and risking his top contender status. As a true competitor, Florian stated that he wanted to “stay active” and not “sit around.”
Stevenson last fought at UFC 86 in early July. He defeated Gleison Tibau in the 2ndRound via guillotine choke.
The UFC has yet to confirm this fight or the November event in Oregon. However, they been eyeing an event in the state for quite some time. In addition, they have UFC 90 slated to take place in October, and the New Year’s Eve event on December 27th. Taking into consideration that they put on at least one promotion every month, this event slides nicely into place.
