What is it with Chael Sonnen and these Brazilian fighters? First it was Anderson Silva and that whole “medium rare” thing, he’s currently got a scrap lined up against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Sonnen’s beef with Wanderlei Silva will apparently never come to an end, and now Vitor Belfort (pictured) wants a crack at him.
UFC president Dana White reported a couple weeks ago they were trying to arrange a bout between Belfort and Tim Kennedy. However, Belfort turned the contest down because he’s only interested in a middleweight affair against Anderson Silva or champion Chris Weidman.
White said Belfort’s “out of his mind” for presenting him with that wish list. So, it appears Belfort has turned his attention towards Chael P. And in true Uncle Chael fashion, he didn’t hesitate to oblige.
“Vitor and I can never quite seem to get this right,” Sonnen stated on FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight,” “I’ve called him out, and now every time he calls me out, it always coincidentally seems to be whenever I have got my plate full.”
“Vitor, I accept,” Sonnen stated. “However, he has a title of number-one contender. If he’s willing to put that on line, not only will I fight him, but I’ll do it on December 28. [Chris] Weidman defends his title, [Ronda] Rousey defends her title, and Vitor, you have a title and I want you to defend it against me.”
Sonnen and Shogun headline the UFC’s debut on Fox Sports 1. After that August 17 tango, an uninjured and victorious Sonnen could be bound for a New Year’s Eve weekend date with Belfort.
