The UFC announced early this morning that former UFC lightweight champion, Sean Sherk, will be taking on up and coming Tyson Griffin at UFC 90. The event is scheduled to take place at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois on October 25th. This will be the promotion’s debut event in the Windy City.
Sherk is coming off of a dominating loss against champion BJ Penn at UFC 84. It was his first bout back inside the Octagon cages since his year-long suspension for testing positive for an illegal substance. He looks to get his career back on track against one of the division’s hottest opponents.
“I’ve been real careful with who I’m going to fight. I want to fight contenders; I want to fight top guys,” Sherk stated earlier this month. “I don’t want to fight up and coming guys … I want to fight the best of the best and that’s what I’m doing with my upcoming fight.”
Griffin has won his last four UFC bouts, with his most recent win coming against Marcus Aurelio at UFC 86. He has fought many of the division’s top tier competitors, and Sherk will be no different.
The UFC also confirmed the addition of two other bouts , which had already been reported by 5thRound.com. Hermes Franca will be taking on Gleison Tibau in a lightweight showdown, as well as Pete Sell challenging Josh Burkman in a welterweight matchup.
UFC 90 will be headlined by Patrick Cote challenging welterweight champion Anderson Silva for his crown.
