‘UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

UFC Poster 163 Aldo Korean Zombie

“UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie” took place Saturday night inside HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Featherweight king Jose Aldo defended his throne against “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung in tonight’s featured attraction. Light heavyweights Lyoto Machida and Phil Davis served as the co-main event.

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Viscardi Andrade Defeats Bristol Marunde via TKO (Punches) at in the 1stRound

1stRound: Overhand right by Andrade to start things off. Andrade drops him with a one-two combination and pounces. Marunde fights to his feet, but eats a left and gets floored again for his troubles. Andrade is giving him the business. It’s a wrap.

Francimar Barroso Defeats Ednaldo Oliveira via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: Barroso is trying to find a way to close the distance, and the crowd is getting antsy. He’s working some leg kicks to try and chop his lanky opponent down. Oliveira hasn’t connected on much of anything and is calling for Barroso to engage.

5thRound scores it: Barroso, 10-9.

2ndRound: Barroso lands another thunderous leg kicks. Oliveira  catches a kick and trips him to the mat. He’s laying the lumber with some solid ground-and-pound. For some dubious reason, he lets Barroso back to his feet. Barroso tags him with two unanswered right hands. He follows up with a left hook. He trips Oliveira to the canvas.

5thRound scores it: Barroso, 1-9.

3rdRound: Oliveira clinches him against the cage. Barroso gets a brief takedown and lands some solid knees. Both fighters appear gassed. They are separated from the cage due to inactivity. Oliveira needs to go for broke. The crowd boos as the final horn sounds.

5thRound scores it: Barroso, 10-9, and likely ran the table, 30-27.

Rani Yahya Defeats Josh Clopton via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Yahya is aggressive with his stand up early. Yahya pulls guard and is going for a leg lock. Yahya takes top position and momentarily takes full mount. Nothing devastating from the Brazilian jiu jitsu ace, but he’s easily dominated position.

5thRound scores it: Yahya, 10-9.

2ndRound: Yahya takes him down in less than a minute. He has Clopton’s left hand pinned behind his own back. Yahya advances to full mount and is pelting him with light punches. Clopton is doing nothing but holding on.

5thRound scores it: Yahya, 10-9.

3rdRound: Clopton needs to pull a rabbit out of his hat to win this one. After a brief scramble, Clopton ends up on top. Crowd starting to voice their displeasure again. They get to their feet. Clopton nails him with a knee to the midsection. Clopton is clinching him against the fence. Yahya connects with a right hand. He puts Clopton on his back again, but must be disappointed he couldn’t finish his overwhelmed opponent.

5thRound scores it: Yahya, 10-9, and likely swept the cards, 30-27.

Ian McCall Defeats Iliarde Santos via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: McCall is doing work with a body-head combo punch. He just rocked Santos with that same barrage. McCall lands on top after a scramble. Solid GnP by McCall before they get back to their feet. They are flinging leather. Santos scores his first points of the bout with a right hand.

5thRound scores it: McCall, 10-9.

2ndRound: Santos is headhunting, but McCall is long gone before anything can happen. McCall continues to change stances to keep his opponent guessing. McCall eats a heavy right hook. Santos trip him to the ground. Uppercut by McCall  to end the frame. Close round to call.

5thRound scores it: Santos, 10-9.

3rdRound: Santos dives for an unsuccessful takedown. McCall is trying to wrestle him to the ground. He lands a couple of knees to the butt. Santos eats a left hook. McCall scores with two consecutive uppercuts.

5thRond scores it: McCall, 10-9, and should win, 29-28.

Sergio Moraes Defeats Neil Magny via Submission (Triangle Choke) at 3:13 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Moraes uses an inside trip to get his opponent to the canvas. He advances to full mount and quickly locks in a triangle choke from top position. That was a nasty transition. Magney is forced to call it quits.

Amanda Nunes Defeats Sheila Gaff via TKO (Elbows) at in the 1stRound

1stRound: They are firing away early. Gaff immediately takes the fight to the ground and briefly jumps on her back. Nunes now scores a takedown and moves to side control. Nunes quickly advances to full mount. Gaff fights to her feet, but is planted right back down. Nunes is unleashing countless elbows. Referee Herb Dean brings the mauling to an end.

Anthony Perosh Defeats Vinny Magalhaes via KO (Punches) at :14 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Well, then. Perosh clocks him with a nasty right cross and drops Magalhaes like a sack of potatoes. A few hammer fists later and that’s all she wrote.

John Lineker Defeats Jose Maria via TKO (Punches) at 1:03 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Lineker catches a kick and clocks Maria in the dome. Spinning backfist by Maria that wobbles his opponent. He drops Lineker with a left hand. Maria pounces and briefly tries a guillotine choke. Maria secures a takedown. They are clinching against the cage and Lineker takes shot to the groin and time is called. Game on. On replay, that knee was clean.

5thRound scores it: Maria, 10-9.

2ndRound: Lineker drops him with a right and follows him to the canvas. After several bombs, the onslaught is brought to a halt. It appears as though Maria hurt his knee and that’s what caused him to fall to the ground.

Thales Leites Defeats Tom Watson via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: Leites takes Watson down and immediately takes his back. Watson has his right arm caught under Leites’ leg as he starts to eat several hard punches. Watson finally escapes and scores with solid leg kicks and finishes strong.

5thRound scores it: Leites, 10-9.

2ndRound: Both guys are exchanging punches, it’s clear that Leites has improved his striking. Leites takes control on the ground and moves to an armbar against the cage. Watson defends well and stands the fight back up. The ground work has slowed Leites down considerably, Watson is starting to land. Nice uppercut lands for Watson.

5thRound scores it: Leites, 10-9.

3rdRound: Leites lands a punch that forces blood to gush from Watson’s right eye. Leites has had him clinched against the cage for the first two minutes of the final frame. Leites trips him to the mat. Watson is a bloody mess. Leites takes his back. He slaps on an arm triangle choke. Leites might not be able to finish, but he was dominant in his return to the big leagues.

5thRound scores it: Leites, 10-9, and should cruise, 30-27.

Cezar Ferreira Defeats Thiago Santos via Submission (Guillotine Choke) at :47 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Ferreira wobbles him with an overhand left. He jumps on top of Santos and promptly slaps on a guillotine choke. That was fast. Santos quickly cries uncle.

Phil Davis Defeats Lyoto Machida via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: After a forever-long break, the live fighting is back. Machida’s right ankle is taped, don’t know what that’s about. He lands a couple of leg kicks to start things off. Davis eats a foot to the face. Four minutes have passed and Davis hasn’t shot one. He actually hasn’t done much of anything. Machida explodes forward and unleashes a flurry of punches, kicks and just missed on a knee to the grill to cap it off. Davis finally scores a takedown. He’s going for a kimura.

5thRound scores it: Machida, 10-9.

2ndRound: Machida unloads a kick to the midsection. He follows up with a head kick. Davis wants to clinch and Machida throws him off. Machida thwarts a takedown, but eats an uppercut as they separate. He stuffs another takedown. Machida doesn’t appear worried about Davis’ standup attack. Machida clocks him with a right hook, though Davis secures a takedown with 20 seconds remaining in the stanza. Much closer round to score.

5thRound scores it: Machida, 10-9.

3rdRound: It can be argued that this scrap is up for grabs entering the final frame. Davis needs to land an earlier takedown to win it instead of shooting at the end of the round like he has been doing. Machida nails him with a knee to the stomach just when Davis went for a takedown. Machida takes his back for a moment. Davis eats a left. Machida’s takedown D has been solid tonight. Machida shuts down two more takedown tries. Davis needs to get desperate.

5thRound scores it: Machida, 10-9, and probably won, 30-27.

Jose Aldo Defeats “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung via TKO (Punches) at 2:00 in the 4thRound (Aldo retains UFC featherweight title)

1stRound: Herb Dean is the third man inside the Octagon. Aldo tags him with a right hand. Nothing much going on, a lot of feeling out from both featherweights. Aldo lands a thunderous leg kick. And another. Aldo gets a very brief takedown. It was so quick, it might not even count. Aldo lands a spinning wheel kick just before the horn blares. 

5thRound scores it: Aldo, 10-9.

2ndRound: Jung charges forward and eats a one-two combination for his efforts. Right uppercut by Aldo. The champ scores with a three-punch combo. Jung wants to push this into the later rounds, but he’s not doing anything to get Aldo tired. Jung looks very hesitant. Aldo gets a body lock and trip him to the ground.

5thRound scores it: Aldo, 10-9.

3rdRound: Jung throwns an errant flying knee, which Aldo catches and tosses him to the ground. Aldo is now on top and has his challenger pinned against the fence. After three warnings for inactivity, Dean finally stands them up. Jung comes out firing. Aldo clinches him against the cage. They are separated again. Jung unleashed another flying knee and some punches.

5thRound scores it: Aldo, 10-9.

4thRound: Jung separated his right shoulder after a flurry and Aldo sees it. Aldo unloads several kicks to the shoulder. Jung tries to pop it back into place. Aldo pounces and is giving him the business. Dean puts an end to the beating.
