Here’s a crazy thought, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (pictured) became the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix champion and UFC light heavyweight champ without knowing how to properly unleash haymakers – so says his new boxing instructor, Freddie Roach.
After alternating between wins and losses over his past eight scraps, Shogun decided he needed to recruit the services of the legendary boxing trainer to tweak his game. According to Roach, the Brazilian’s hands are far more deadly now that he’s fine tuned them.
“When we first started, he didn’t really know how to pivot, he didn’t know how to put his full weight behind his punch, but we’ve been working on that,” Roach stated. “He’s a great puncher, a great striker and in a short time we’ve come a long way.”
Shogun’s refined standup skills will be on display August 17 against Chael Sonnen. The 205-pounders headline the UFC’s debut on Fox Sports 1.
