UFC Poster Fight Night Shogun Sonnen

“UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen” took place Saturday night inside TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

A light heavyweight affair between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Chael Sonnen headlined the festivities. Heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Travis Browne served as the co-main event.

James Vick Defeats Ramsey Nijem via Submission (Guillotine Choke) at :58 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Nijem scores a takedown within seconds. Vick gets back up and is fending off another takedown attempt. Nijem is a tad careless and gets caught in a tight power guillotine choke. That’s all she wrote.

Ovince St. Preux Defeats Cody Donovan via KO (Punches) 2:07 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Donovan working hard for a takedown, but OSP is doing a good job of fending him off. Donovan has him clinched against the cage. He finally gets him down, though OSP immediately reverses and is giving him the business. After several nasty bombs, referee Herb Dean brings the mauling to halt. The stoppage could have been a tad premature.

Manny Gamburyan Defeats Cole Miller via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Gamburyan starts things off with a heavy leg kick. A couple of stiff jabs by Miller. Miller is really exploiting his significant reach advantage. Gamburyan shoots, picks him up and slams him to the mat. Short elbow by “The Anvil.” And another. Enough to steal the round? Miller gets to his feet an drops a couple of elbows to his head.

Gamburyan is still down, right in front of Miller’s corner. The elbows appeared to be legal. The doctor is examining him.

5thRound scores it: Miller, 10-9

2ndound: Game on. Two thunderous leg kicks by Gamburyan. Miller answers with a knee to the grill. Gamburyan gets a brief takedown. Miller gets to his feet and drops a couple more elbows to his dome. Gamburyan’s head is bleeding from the second shot. Miller momentarily took his back, but Gamburyan regains top position after a scramble. Miller fights back up. Miller continues to unload elbows while Gamburyan tries to secure another takedown. Close round to score.

5thRound scores it: Gamburyan, 10-9.

3rdRound: Gamburyan really working his leg kicks now. Miller scores a one-two combination. Gamburyan eats a knee to the grill, but manages to secure a takedown for his efforts. Gamburyan is smothering him on the canvas.

5thRound scores it: Gamburyan, 10-9, and likely rallied, 29-28.

Diego Brandao Defeats Daniel Pineda via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Brandao lands a hard leg kick and follows up with a right hook. Pineda eats a right and appears wobbled. Brandao unleashes a flying knee to the face. He tags Pineda with a couple more punches. Pineda is still standing and fighting back. Brandao nails him with two unanswered right hooks. Takedown by Brandao. Pineda connects with a standing elbow.

5thRound scores it: Brandao, 10-9.

2ndound: Brandao gets a takedown. Pineda fights to his feet, but gets planted right back down after eating a right. Pineda sweeps and ends up in full mount with two minutes to go. He’s dropping some serious ground-and-pound. Brandao gassing again? Brandao going for a leg lock from off his back.

5thRound scores it: Pineda, 10-9.

3rdRound: Brandao secures a takedown, drops a couple of hammers and lets him back up. Then he puts Pinenda right back down. Brandao appears gassed, but gets another takedown. Pineda gets up and lands a couple of elbows. Brandao trips him to the ground again. They get stood up. They are both moving in slow motion.

5thRound scores it: Brandao, 10-9, and probably won, 29-28.

Steven Siler Defeats Mike Brown via KO (Punches) at :50 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Siler drops him with a right uppercut and pounces. He’s giving Brown the business. He lands three flush bombs to the face and Brown goes limp. It’s a wrap. Brown protests the stoppage, but he was out and knocked back into consciousness. 

Conor McGregor Defeats Max Holloway via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

1stRound: As expected, McGregor is bringing the heat early. He’s throwing a lot of unorthodox strikes, with some landing. Holloway continues to get beat to the punch, and kick. McGregor continues to taunt him, daring Holloway to engage. Holloway’s face is bloodied.

5thRound scores it: McGregor, 10-9.

2ndound: McGregor unleashing a lot of push kicks to the knee, a la Jon Jones. McGregor does not seem to respect Holloway’s standup. Holloway eats an uppercut. Holloway answers with a left hand. McGregor catches a kick and trip him to the canvas. Holloway gets him in his full guard.

5thRound scores it: McGregor, 10-9.

3rdRound: Holloway tags him with a right. McGregor shoots and easily scores a takedown. He easily advances to side control. Holloway briefly got to his feet, but is dragged right back down. McGregor gets full mount. Solid GnP from McGregor. Holloway escapes and has a minute to go for broke. McGregor secures another takdown.

5thRound scores it: McGregor, 10-9, and easily swept the cards, 30-27.

Michael McDonald Defeats Brad Pickett via Submission (Triangle Choke) at 3:43 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: McDonald wobbles him with a left hook. McDonald is laying the lumber, but Pickett refuses to stay down. Pickett falls to the mat again and comes up firing. Vicious flurry by the youngster. It appears Pickett has weathered the storm. McDonald drops him again with a right hand and follows him to the canvas. He lets Pickett back up. Pickett’s face is battered.

5thRound scores it: McDonald, 10-9 (could argue for a 10-8)

2ndRound: Pickett is a warrior. He was getting crushed in the opening five minutes and doesn’t seem any worse for the wear. He takes McDonald down and has half the stanza to work. Pickett tags him with a short elbow. McDonald throws on an armbar-triangle choke from off his back. Pickett defended the armbar, but is forced to tap to the choke. Impressive showing by “Mayday.”

Main Card:

Michael Johnson Defeats Joe Lauzon via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-25)

1stRound: Johnson’s standup looks sharp early. Nothing significant landing, tough. Lauzon scores with a left. Johnson floors him with a straight left. Lauzon gets right back up, but still appears wobbly. Johnson unleashes a flurry. Johnson drops him with a left and lets him back up. Lauzon gets tripped back down just before the horn sounds.

5thRound scores it: Johnson, 10-9.

2ndound: Lauzon clinches him against the fence. Johnson fends off a takedown attempt. Lauzon lands a left and Johnson counters with two uppercuts. Johnson appears to be slowing down. Johnson gets a last-second takedown. That might steal him the close stanza.

5thRound scores it: Johnson, 10-9.

3rdRound: One-two combo by Johnson. This doesn’t appear to be Lauzon’s night, and Beantown will not be happy if he loses. Johnson comes with a wicked flurry. Lauzon can’t muster up any offense. Has Johnson ever looked better inside the Octagon? He gets one final takedown for good measure.

5thRound scores it: Johnson, 10-9, and runs the table, 30-37.

John Howard Defeats Uriah Hall via Split Decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Hall surprisingly takes him down within seconds. He lets Howard back up. Howard nails him with a thunderous leg kick. And another after Hall misses on a spinning heel kick. Howard clocks him with a left hook. Tight round to score.

5thRound scores it: Hall, 10-9.

2ndound: Hall charges forward for a takedown and almost gets caught in a guillotine choke. Howard has him clinched against the fence. Hall lands a knee to the midsection. Hall goes for a kimura and takes Hall’s back after a scramble. Howard fights free and gets a takedown. Certainly not the most thrilling scrap of the night.

5thRound scores it: Howard, 10-9.

3rdRound: Hall has him clinched against the cage. Not much action in this fight and fans are letting them hear it. Howard secures a takedown. Hall gets to his feet and takes a hold of his opponent’s back. They are standing in the center of the cage asking for cheers. The crowd greets them with boos. Hall attempts an unusual side kick and ends up on his back, Howard jumps in with a punch and ends up on top as the horn sounds.

5thRound: Howard, 10-9, and could have won, 29-28.

Matt Brown Defeats Mike Pyle via KO (Punches) at :29 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Brown comes out like a house on fire. He clocks Pyle with a right hook and follows up with a knee to the midsection. He’s standing over Pyle and raining down bombs. Game, set, match, Brown. Pyle is protesting the stoppage, but it’s tough to know exactly what happened when you’re unconscious on the canvas.

Urijah Faber Defeats Yuri Alcantara via Unanimous Decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27)

1stRound: Faber charges forward and Alcantara tosses him to the side and ends up on top. Alcantara now takes his back. Faber is throwing punches behind him. Faber is close to slipping out the backdoor. And he decides to come through the front and slam Alcantara on his back. Faber unloading nasty GnP. Did Faber just rally to win the round?

5thRound scores it: Faber, 10-9.

2ndound: Faber gets a takedown in under a minute. He continues his relentless GnP assault. Alcantara is eating countless elbows. Alcantara messed up Faber’s cornrows in the first two minutes and “The California Kid’s” pissed now. He’s dominating the Brazilian on the mat.

5tRound scores it: Faber, 10-9.

3rdRound: Alcantara stuffs a takedown. Faber easily gets him down on his second try. Three minutes to go and Alcantara needs a miracle. Faber is simply smothering him. Faber is relentless. Alcantara tires a Hail Mary armbar to no avail.

5thRound scores it: Faber, 10-9, and should take the cards, 30-27.

Travis Browne Defeats Alistair Overeem via KO (Kick) at 4:08 it the 1stRound

1stRound: Overeem comes out fast. He’s unloading knees into Browne’s midsection. Overeem has him clinched against the cage. Nice body shot by Browne. He then follows up with an errant flying knee and Overeem pounces. He’s unleashing a flurry of thunderous shots. The fight is close to getting stopped, but the ref is giving Browne the benefit of the doubt. Overeem appears to land an illegal knee but it isn’t called. Browne comes back firing. Did Overeem punch himself out? Browne drops him with a front kick to the face and follows up with some bombs on the canvas. GAME OVER.

Chael Sonnen Defeats Mauricio “Shogun” Rua via Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 4:47 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Sonnen takes him down within 10 seconds. He quickly gets back up and trips Sonnen to the mat. Sonnen uses a guillotine choke to get back up. They are clinching and Sonnen swings him to the canvas. Sonnen landing some short punches, nothing devastating. Shogun gets to his feet but is caught in a guillotine choke. Sonnen pulls guard to secure the lock. Shogun is forced to cry uncle.
