How awesome were Saturday night’s fights on Fox Sports 1? How much awesomer (I know it’s not a word) were they when the new network surprised fight fans with their floor camera?

For the first time in MMA history, a canvas-level cam filmed the athletes when the action hit the mat. The new angle pleasantly caught everyone off guard.

Following the “UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen” post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White said it’s a small camera that shoots through the cage and blurs out the fencing. Although White didn’t confirm, the floor cam is believed to be FOX’s property so it will only be available for shows on the network.

If I’m gonna be a nitpicker, the video quality wasn’t necessarily in high-definition and the motion was a little awkward. Other than that, nothing could have been awesomer (I know).

Chael Sonnen (pictured) submitted Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the night’s featured attraction.

TD Garden in Boston hosted the festivities.
