UFC Lightweight Anthony Pettis

Benson Henderson may have been the UFC’s three-time defending lightweight champion, but many believed Anthony Pettis (pictured) had the advantage over Henderson entering UFC 164. In fact, some thought Pettis had his number.

Well, Pettis proved his supporters correct on Saturday night by quickly submitting Henderson with an armbar. The finish was rather anticlimactic given all the hoopla surrounding their rematch after what took place in their initial encounter (the UFC will never allow us to forget the “Showtime Kick,” as well they shouldn’t) and the fact the arena was buzzing for hometown hero Pettis.

Henderson verbally submitted at the 4:31 mark in the opening round, but the only person to hear him cry uncle was Pettis. Referee Herb Dean didn’t come into the picture until after Pettis released the lock and confirmed with Henderson that he had given up.

The awkward moment of confusion ended when Pettis leaped onto the Octagon cage to celebrate the biggest accomplishment of his career.

UFC 164 took place inside Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
