Heavyweight Josh Barnett (pictured) made a triumphant return to the UFC on Saturday night. However, it didn’t come without controversy.
Barnett and Frank Mir, a fellow former UFC champion, were exchanging bombs early. Barnett eventually muscled Mir up against the cage and that’s when he really started to lay the lumber.
“The Warmaster” landed several power shots before dropping Mir with a knee to the grill. Referee Rob Hinds, who was working the biggest fight of his UFC career, immediately stepped in to stop the scrap.
Mir, who was face-down at the time of the stoppage, instantly jumped up to protest the call.
UFC president Dana White clearly agreed with Mir. Shortly after the verdict was rendered, White tweeted, “F****** ridiculous stoppage!!!! The guys with experience make mistakes. That guy had no business being in the Co Main event!”
Prior to last night, Barnett hadn’t stepped inside the Octagon since November 2001.
UFC 164 took place inside Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
