Did Jon Jones (pictured) beat Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165? Did Alexander Gustafsson serve Jon Jones an upset special on Saturday night? Was it a draw?
Most fans inside Air Canada Centre in Toronto emphatically claim B is the right answer.
However, the only answer that counts is A, because when the dust settled on their 25-minute shootout, Jones was handed a (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) unanimous decision victory by the three judges sitting Octagon-side.
Many believed Gustafsson was the clear winner of the first and third rounds, while Jones took the fourth and fifth frames. The second stanza was very tight, and winning those five minutes likely sealed the deal for “Bones.”
Just in case you were wondering, Jones was a 9-1 odds-on favorite to retain his title. “The Mauler,” meanwhile, was a 5.5-1 underdog.
Jones and Gustafsson didn’t attend the post-fight press conference because they were taken directly to the hospital following their instant classic.
UFC president Dana White said he’s open to arranging an immediate rematch between the 205-pounders. However, Part II is far from guaranteed because the UFC needs to hear back from doctors before making a decision.
With the win, Jones became the UFC’s most decorated light heavyweight champion by posting his sixth consecutive title defense.
