Bellator Douglas Lima Champ

With UFC 165 hoarding most of this weekend’s MMA headlines, Bellator’s 100th show went nearly unnoticed. That was until Douglas Lima (pictured) took center stage.

Lima met UFC veteran Ben Saunders in the finals of Bellator’s Season 8 welterweight tournament in Friday night’s featured attraction. He continued to beat Saunders to the punch on most occasions, including an uppercut that sent “Killa B” to the canvas and a vicious lights out head kick that ended the assault in the second round.

The strike is a candidate for “Knockout of the Year.”

Lima scored a massive $100,000 paycheck for taking the 170-pound tourney. Bellator welterweight champ Ben Askren’s contract with the promotion is currently expired, so it is unknown what Lima’s immediate future holds.

It’s possible he will meet the winner of the Season 9 tournament for the vacant welterweight belt if Bellator doesn’t retain Askren’s services.

Bellator 100 took place inside Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.
