As the old adage goes, ‘If you can’t beat ’em, pose for a picture with ’em at the hospital.’ Or something like that…
That’s exactly what Alexander Gustafsson did Saturday night following his heartbreaking, and controversial, unanimous decision defeat to reigning UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones.
“Didnt go my way last nite but ill be back stronger thats a promise!!!” Gustafsson wrote on his Instagram accompanied by the above pic.
Both fighters didn’t attend UFC 165‘s post-fight press conference because they were taken to the hospital immediately following their 25-minute affair. Gustafsson and Jones appear to be in good spirits – of course Jones would be, he eked out a win by the skin of his teeth – but “Bones” is clearly the more battered athlete at the time the picture was taken.
According to MMAJunkie.com, both were released from the hospital after being cleared of any major injuries (Sorry, Alex. There’s simply no cure for a broken heart). Therefore, injuries won’t be the roadblock in arranging an immediate rematch between the 205-pounders.
With the win, Jones became the most decorated light heavyweight champion in UFC by posting his sixth consecutive title defense. Gustafsson, meanwhile, gained a hoard of new fans for being the first man to take the game’s top pound-for-pound fighter into deep waters.
Most fans inside Air Canada Centre and many media members sitting in press row believed Gustafsson did enough to beat Jones on Saturday.
Just in case you were wondering, Jones was a whopping 9-1 odds-on favorite to retain his crown against “The Mauler.”
