Dana White: Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson Rematch Could Go Down Super Bowl Weekend

Home-cage advantage for Alexander Gustafsson in Sweden? Super Bowl Saturday in Las Vegas? How about Vegas in general? Those spots are all in play to hold a potential rematch between reigning UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones (pictured) and Gustafsson.

While UFC president Dana White refuses to confirm an immediate sequel is on the horizon following Saturday’s controversial instant classic, which saw Jones retaining his throne via unanimous decision, there are certain locations that simply make sense to host Part II if it comes to fruition.

“We don’t know,” White stated at the UFC 165 post-fight press conference. “We’ve got to wait a few weeks and see how this thing plays out and what we want to do. But, it wouldn’t be like we couldn’t do it in Sweden. I’d be pretty great to do the fight there. I love it there.

“But Vegas is never bad, either. Or, if the timing went right in this fight, it could be a Super Bowl [Saturday] fight, too.”

White said the primary roadblock in arranging an instant rematch would be the health of the 205-pounders, who were immediately taken to the hospital after their 25-minute shootout. However, MMAJunkie.com reported both fighters were released Sunday after being cleared of any major injuries.

The UFC has taken its talents to Sweden on two occasions, with both events going down inside Stockholm’s Ericsson Globe Arena. With Gustafsson’s stock soaring at an all-time high, it’s understandable why they would want to put “The Mauler” in front of his hometown peeps.

However, it wouldn’t exactly be fair to Jones, who just became the UFC’s most decorated light heavyweight champion by posting his sixth consecutive title defense. It would also mark Jones’ fourth out-of-US fight in six outings.

Super Bowl Saturday certainly makes sense from a timing standpoint. The February 1 fight date gives each athlete ample time to recover, prepare and tinker with their strategies.

In addition, the UFC is notorious for hosting blockbusters in Vegas the day before the biggest pigskin game of the year.

Sorry, Glover Teixeira. My Spidey senses are telling me you might be on the outside looking in right now.
