Megumi Fujii

Megumi Fujii (pictured), the Ronda Rousey of women’s mixed martial arts long before anyone in the sport had even heard of the “Rowdy” one, retired under disappointing circumstances Saturday in Japan.

Fujii suffered two accidental pokes to her right eye in the opening round of her “Vale Tudo Japan 3rd” rematch against Jessica Aguilar, with the second one causing an extended stoppage in action. While she powered on to complete through the second round, the cageside doctor erred on the side of caution and called an end to the fight, and Fujii’s illustrious career after the second stanza.

The TKO defeat drops Fujii’s professional record to an impressive 26-3, with 19 of her victories came via submission. Two of her blemishes came to Aguilar. “Mega Megu” previously lost a unanimous decision to Aguilar at Bellator 69 in May 2012.

After the fight, the promotion honored the 39-year-old with an in-cage ceremony. Aguilar was also clearly disappointed Fujii’s career had to end in that fashion.

Going out on a loss is difficult enough, but going out like this will be an even tougher pill to swallow.
