It took Rousimar Palhares (pictured) all of 31 seconds to tap Mike Pierce on Wednesday at UFC Fight Night 29. It took Palhares about two extra ticks after that to lose out on $50,000 for “Submission of the Night.”
Palhares targeted Pierce’s left leg from the jump and it didn’t take the jiu jitsu specialist long to get his clamps on it. Once he did, it was pretty much a wrap.
Pierce survived the first leg lock attempt, but was forced to cry uncle on the heel hook moments later. Despite the fact Pierce tapped and the referee came crashing in to call the fight, Palhares continued to crank on his foot for a couple extra seconds before releasing the lock.
Although he posted the only submission on the card, the UFC refused to cut Palhares an extra $50,000 check for “Submission of the Night” for “unsportsmanlike conduct.” It was the first time the promotion yanked a bonus because of inappropriate behavior.
