UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera Results

UFC 105 is officially underway inside the MEN Arena in Manchester, England. You can catch all of the main bouts airing via same-day tape delay on Spike TV beginning at 8PM ET/PT. We will be posting the results based on the east coast feed, so don’t look if you’re not prepared to know the answers.

Randy “The Natural” Couture makes his return to the light heavyweight division against Brandon Vera in the night’s main event.

Outside of that light heavyweight clash, UFC 105 offers a solid card with title implications in multiple divisions. Mike Swick returns to action following a concussion suffered in training against the hard hitting Dan Hardy, while the U.K.’s own Michael Bisping looks to bounce back from a devastating knockout loss to Dan Henderson at UFC 100.

Ross Pearson Defeated Aaron Riley via TKO (Doctor’s Stoppage-Cut) at 4:38 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: A much more relaxed Pearson is landing his right hand at will. A few straight rights and an uppercut allows Pearson to close the gap and get a muay-thai clinch and land several knees to Riley’s body and face. Riley just can’t get off as Pearson looks like the much better striker.

2ndRound: The 2ndRound starts much like the 1st ended, with Pearson getting the better of the exchanges. Riley attempts a sluggish takedown attempt and gets shrugged away. Pearson has Riley up against the cage once again and lands another knee. You have to give Riley credit for hanging in and trying to make something happen but Pearson is dominating the standup. A flying knee looks like it opened up a cut on Riley’s face which causes the doctor and referee to stop the bout.

Matt Brown Defeated James Wilks via TKO (Strikes) at 2:27 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Both fighters start in the clinch with Brown up against the cage, Brown lands a nice elbow which causes Wilks to shoot in for a takedown but Brown is defending well. Brown looks to be a little quicker to the punch as Wilks comes in for another takedown that’s defended well again. Wilks lands a nice left head kick that backs Brown up, Wilks follows up and gets back into the clinch. Brown sinks in a standing guillotine but Wilks slips out and scores his first takedown as the round comes to an end.

2ndRound: Brown lands a flying knee at the start of the 2ndRound that stuns Wilks and drops him but he’s able to grab a leg for a submission attempt. The fighters get back to their feet as Wilks looks to have recovered from the shot he took. Fatigue is starting to set in for both fighters. Brown lands a combination that stuns and drops Wilks again but Wilks is able to sweep Brown and end up in side control. Brown nearly catches Wilks in a triangle choke as the round ends.

3rdRound: Wilks has a mouse under his left eye that must have an effect on his vision but he’s continuing to work in the clinch and drops down into a kimura attempt that had Brown is serious trouble. Brown takes the full mount and starts landing strikes which brings a fight to an end.

Michael Bisping Defeated Denis Kang via TKO (Strikes) at : in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Kang catches Bisping with a straight right and drops him early but Bisping pulls into half-guard and won’t allow Kang to get any space. Kang now moves into full mount but Bisping escapes back into the guard, even though Kang is controlling the position, he hasn’t done any damage. Now back into the full mount, Kang lands an elbow as Bisping once again escapes in the full guard. Bisping almost locks in an armbar but Kang easily escapes, Round 1 comes to an end.

2ndRound: Between rounds Bisping asks his corner “what happened?” not knowing how the fight got to the ground. He seems to have regained his composure as he’s starting to throw some combinations that don’t land. Kang lands an overhand right and is landing his jab at will. The hometown favorite is starting to look a little tentative as the round moves on. Bisping shoots in and scores a single-leg takedown and ends up in Kang’s full guard. Bisping is starting to turn it on as Kang gets back to his feet but takes a lot of damage in doing so. Kang has a cut on his nose and looks like he’s just trying to survive the round. Bisping scores another takedown and finally finishes Kang off as he’s unable to defend anything.

Dan Hardy Defeated Mike Swick via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: Hardy catches Swick rushing in right a right and causes Swick’s legs to buckle but Swick grabs onto Hardy to prevent anymore damage. An accidental knee to Hardy’s groin by Swick gives a break in the action, when the fight restarts, Swick shoots in for another takedown but gets stuffed. Hardy lands a couple of knees to Swick’s body as they are up against the cage in the clinch. The fighters separate and land a couple of shoots each on the way out.

2ndRound: Hardy lands a 1-2 combination to start the round that has Swick noodle-legged but Hardy goes into the clinch with Swick and gives Swick the chance to recover. Both guys exchange with some dirty boxing as Swick looks to have completely recovered. Swick slips on a high kick attempt and quickly gets back to his feet. Swick lands a 3 punch combination but Hardy continues moving forward. Hardy throws a big hook but gets countered by Swick. Hardy catches Swick a couple more times before the horn sounds.

3rdRound: The 3rdRound starts off with a bang as both fighters are going after each other with bombs. Swick appears to be getting the better of the exchanges but Hardy catches Swick with a left hook that stuns Swick again but Hardy is finally able to take Swick down. Hardy is throwing elbows, one of which has cut Swick on the back of his head. The fight gets stood back up and Swick has once again recovered as he tries to land another combination but misfires. It’s clear that Swick is aware of Hardy’s power as the 3rdRound ends.

Randy Couture Defeated Brandon Vera via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Verae starts with a high kick and a punch that forces Couture to clinch up. Couture gets Vera up against the Octagon cage in the clinch, as the referee separates the fighters, Couture quickly clinches again and gets Vera down. Vera fights his way back up and eats 2 knees but is able to fight off a single-leg takedown attempt by Couture as the fights separates again. Not much action in the 1stRound but it was a classic Couture fight as he controls the action after eating a couple strikes from Vera early.

2ndRound: Couture gets poked in the eye and kicked in the groin at the start of the 2ndRound. Vera lands a knee to Couture’s body but Couture gets Vera back up against the cage. Vera is doing a good job of fighting off all of Couture’s takedown attempts. Vera scores a body kick that turns Couture and drops him in pain, Vera ends up in Couture’s full guard. The fight gets stood up as Couture goes back to the clinch and scores with some dirty boxing.

3rdRound: Vera lands a leg kick and gets countered with a Couture right hook and a couple of follow-up shots as they clinch again. Couture is more active in the clinch but the referee separates them again. Vera lands two body kicks that hurt Couture once again as its Vera who clinches Couture up against the cage and goes in for a takedown. Vera is able to take Couture down and land in the full mount but Couture fights back up as the fighters exchange to end the fight.
