“UFC 166: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos III” took place Saturday night inside Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. 

Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez defended his throne against Junior dos Santos in tonight’s featured attraction. Bitter rivals Daniel Cormier and Roy Nelson served as the co-main event.

Kyoji Horiguchi Defeats Dustin Pague via TKO (Punches) at 3:51 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Pague gets a body lock and immediately jumps on his back. He’s going for a rear-naked choke. Horiguchi has been piggybacking him for about a minute. Horiguchi escapes the choke, but Pague is still hanging on him. Pague finally lets go of his back. Horiguchi tags him with a right hand. Pague hip tosses him to the mat.

5thRound scores it: Pague, 10-9.

2ndRound: Pague eats two un asnwered lefts. Horiguchi drops him with another vicious left hook and follows him to the mat. He’s giving Pague the business on the ground. Pague seems to have recovered and reverses to top position. They get to their feet and Horiguchi slams him to the ground. Horiguchi is dropping bombs. It’s a wrap.

Andre Fili Defeats Jeremy Larsen via TKO (Punches) at :53 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Fili is taking it to him early. He wobbles Larsen with a big right hand. Fili is unleashing several knees to his dome. Larsen is gushing blood from his forehead. Time is called to check the cut. Game on. Larsen comes out firing. Fili answers. Larsen catches a kick and scores a takedown. Fili working for several submission from his back. He wiggles free.

5thRound scores it: Fili, 10-9.

2ndRound: Larsen has two cuts on his forehead, the one above his right eyebrow is nasty. Larsen tags him with a stiff right hand. Filli stuns him with a right hook of his own and goes in for the kill. A couple of punches on the ground and the scrap is called. Fili may have come in overweight, but he took the fight on 10 days’ notice.

Tony Ferguson Defeats Mike Rio via Submission (D’arce Choke) at 1:52 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Rio working hard for a takedown, but is getting stuffed. Ferguson wobbles him with a left hook and pounces. He slaps on a D’arce choke. Game over.

Adlan Amagov Defeats T.J. Waldburger via KO (Punches) at 3:45 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Nothing to write home about in the opening two minutes. Amagov nails him with a spinning back kick to the stomach. Amagov lands some vicious lefts in the clinch. Waldburger falls to the canvas. Amagov is laying the lumber. Waldburger is unconscious on the canvas.

Waldburger was carried off in a stretch and taken immediately to the hospital. UFC officials said he was alert and speaking.

KJ Noons Defeats George Sotiropoulos via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

1stRound: Noons takes the center of the cage, but nobody has thrown anything in over a minute. Crowd is getting anxious. Noons lands a body shot. Crowd booing pretty heavily now. Noons takes a poke to the eye and time is called. Game on. Noons comes out firing and is lighting up Sotiropoulos just before the final horn.

5thRound scores it: Noons, 10-9.

2ndRound: Much of the same slow-paced action in this round. Sotiropoulos finally shoots and scores a takedown. Noons gets to his feet. Nice hook to the body by Sotiropoulos.

5thRound scores it: Sotiropoulos, 10-9.

3rdRound: Noons wobbles him with a right. Sotiropoulos is gushing blood from his forehead. Nooons doesn’t go for the kill, opts to continue his methodical attack. Noons thwarts a takedown attempt. Another right by Noons. Sotiropoulos using leg kicks to nail Noons in the head with a kick. Noons answer with a right, then a left.

5thRound scores it: Noons, 10-9, and likely won, 29-28.

Jessica Eye Defeats Sarah Kaufman via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Eye has her clinched against the cage. Eye lands some punches in the clinch, Kaufman counters with some knees to the midsection. Solid jab by Eye. Eye lands a left and elbow as they break from the clinch.

5thRound scores it: Eye, 10-9.

2ndRound: Kaufman lands two unanswered strikes to the dome, one was an elbow. Big right by Kaufman. And another. Kaufman is finding a home for her right. Eye is working her jab.

5thRound scores it: Kaufman, 10-9.

3rdRound: Overhand right seems to have wobbled Eye. Kaufman has her clinched against the fence. They separate and Eye connects with a right. Kaufman counters with a left. Two big rights by Kaufman in the clinch. Kaufman clocks her with a right and a goes in for the kill. Eye appears to have recovered. That may have won her the fight.Kaufman scores another vicious right before the final horn.

5thRound scores it: Kaufman, 10-9, and likely rallied to win, 29-28.

Hector Lombard Defeats Nate Marquardt via KO (Punches) at 1:48 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Marquardt throwing his jab out there to keep the distance. Lombard is flinging heavy leather. He clocks Marquardt and drops him with a barrage of punches. Several hammerfists on the ground and the assault is brought to an end. Marquardt was sleeping for a moment.

Tim Boetsch Defeats CB Dollaway via Split Decision (30-26, 29-27, 30-26)

1stRound: Dollaway tags him with a right. Boetsch counters with a right. Dollaway raises his hands asking for his opponent to engage. Dollaway lands an inside leg kick and left hook. Boetsch gets a brief takedown. Good leg kick by Boetsch. Dollaway doing solid work in the clinch. Dollaway’s hands look sharp.

5thRound scores it: Dollaway, 10-9.

2ndRound: Dollaway doing quite a bit of taunting. He scores a takedown. They get to their feet. Boetsch goes for a standing guillotine choke to no avail. He’s draped on Dollaway’s back. Boetsch has him clinched against the cage, but Dollaway is the one doing the damage. Boetsch scores with a right hand. Dollaway scores a takedown and lands in side control. Boetsch goes for a kimura from his back.

5thRound scores it: Dollaway, 10-9.

3rdRound: Boetsch takes a finger to the eye and time is called. Game on. After a flurry, Boetsch takes another finger to the eye, his left one this time. Referee takes a point from Dollaway. That is huge because the second finger was far more accidental than the first. Dollaway scores a takedown. He moves to full mount. Boetsch gets up and has him clinched against the fence. Dollaway tags him with a knee to the midsection. Heavy overhand right by Boetsch. Dollaway goes for a takedown, but almost gets caught in a guillotine on the way down. Crazy ending.

5thRound scores it: Draw, 9-9, but Dollaway probably takes it, 29-27.

John Dodson Defeats Darrell Montague via KO (Punch) at 4:13 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Slow action early, and the crowd is not appreciating it. Dodson drops him with a left and pounces. He picks Montague up and slams him to the mat. Montague gets up, but appears out on his feet. Montague has amazingly recovered. Oh… Dodson catches him again and Montague is planking. Game. Set. Match, Dodson.

Gabriel Gonzaga Defeats Shawn Jordan via TKO (Punches) at 1:33 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Gonzaga catches him with a right hook and drops him. He unleashes a barrage of bombs on the ground. Game over.

Gilbert Melendez Defeats Diego Sanchez via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: Sanchez catches a head kick and trips him to the canvas. Sanchez jumps on his back and has both hooks in and is going for a rear-naked choke. Melendez calmly unhooks his feet and tosses him off. Melendez’s hands are much crisper in the opening minutes. He continues to beat Sanchez to the punch. Melendez working the body nicely. Sanchez has a big gash by his left eye. Sanchez answers with a kick to the body. They are trading thunder in the pocket. Melendez briefly drops him with a right.

5thRound scores it: Melendez, 10-9.

2ndRound: They trade right hands. Time is called to check Sanchez’s cut. Game on. Melendez tags him with a body and head shot combo. Sanchez connects with a kick to the body. Melendez answers with a combo. Sanchez scores a brief takedown. Melendez stuffs a takedown and nails him in the dome with a knee for his troubles.

5thRound scores it: Melendez, 10-9.

3rdRound: Melendez looks calm and clean, Sanchez is bloodied up. They put on a crazy flurry, but it didn’t appear Sanchez landed anything. Melendez, however, connected multiple times. Sanchez, as expected, continues to charge forward. Time is called again to check Sanchez’s cut. He’s a bloody mess right now. Game on. Sanchez drops him with a right! He jumps on his back and transitions to a guillotine choke. Melendez gets to his feet. What a fight! Melendez takes his back to avoid danger. Sanchez wiggles loose. Sanchez scores with another body kick. Sanchez is cray. Fight of the Night for sure.

5thRound scores it: Sanchez, 10-9, but should lose, 29-28.

Daniel Cormier Defeats Roy Nelson via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: Cormier takes him down in under a minute. Nelson trying to get to his feet, but Cormier is draped all over him. Nelson eats a knee to the grill. Nelson used a kimura attempt to get up for a moment, but Cormier is smothering him. Powerful knee to the midsection by Cormier. A second one appeared low and time is called. Game on. Nelson looking for a right bomb, but Cormier scores with a huge one-two combo. He follows up with a left.

5thRound scores it: Cormier, 10-9.

2ndRound: Cormier’s speed advantage is starting to show through. He’s keeping Nelson off-balance by faking takedowns. He briefly scored one. Nelson is in the best shape he’s been in a while, but he’s breathing heavy. Cormier is grinding him against the cage and working in the clinch. Cormier using leg kicks now.

5thRound scores it: Cormier, 10-9.

3rdRound: Nelson looking for the knockout, but can’t catch his faster opponent. Cormier looks fresh as a daisy. He’s starting to punish Nelson with kicks to the body. Nelson still seeking the home run. Nelson eats a front-kick to the grill. Some boos in the crowd – Melendez and Sanchez spoiled them… Cormier takes him down for a second. Cormier using a lot of kicks, so he either wants to keep Nelson at bay or he hurt his right hand at some point.

5thRound scores it: Cormier, 10-9, and should run the table, 30-27.

Cain Velasquez Defeats Junior dos Santos via TKO (Punches) at 3:09 in the 5thRound (Velasquez retains UFC heavyweight title)

1stRound: Herb Dean is the third man inside the Octagon. Dos Santos wobbles him early with a left, but Velasquez gets a hold of a leg and goes for a takedown. Dos Santos fends him off and clips the champ again. Velasquez has him clinched against the fence. They separate. Dos Santos surprisingly throws a head kick on the wrestler. Velasquez clinches him again. Velasquez finally drags him to the mat and has half the round to work. Velasquez transitions to his back. Dos Santos fights to his feet, but Velasquez is still draped all over him. Velasquez methodically punishing him in the clinch.

5thRound scores it: Velasquez, 10-9.

2ndRound: Velasquez working the clinch game again. He’s kneeing dos Santos’ thighs. Dos Santos gets free, though doesn’t unload anything and Velasquez clinches him again. Dos Santos hip tosses him to the mat momentarily, but eats a right hand for his troubles. Velasquez back to clinching. Dos Santos lands a big right just before the horn.

5thRound scores it: Velasquez, 10-9.

3rdRound: Dos Santos tags him with a left. Velasquez immediately gets a body lock. He nails the dos Santos with a right. Velasquez unloading more knees to the legs. Short elbow by dos Santos. Pro-Velasquez crowd starting to boo his excessive clinch game. Velasquez drops him with a right and is bringing the pain on the ground. Dos Santos gets up, but is clearly out on his feet. Velasquez is clinching him against the fence, he should separate and start whaling away.

5thRound scores it: Velasquez, 10-9

4thRound: Velasquez clobbers him with a right to start off the championship rounds. One more good flurry and Dean will likely stop this. There was a big barrage, but Dean lets the fight continue. Dos Santos still has heat in his punches. Incredible. He tags Velasquez with an uppercut. Both fighters are covered in blood. Time is called to check dos Santos’ battered mug. Game on. Big short elbow by dos Santos. Blood is gushing down the challenger’s face. Dos Santos still firing off elbows. He follows up with a left hook.

5thRound scores it: Velasquez, 10-9.

5thRound: Needless to say, dos Santos needs a finish. Velasquez quickly gets a takedown. Dos Santos gets right back up. Velasquez is clinching. Dos Santos goes for a desperation standing D’arce choke, but Velasquez escapes. Dos Santos falls to the ground and slams his head on the ground. He covers up and the fight is called.
