World Series of Fighting is just one day away from crowning their first welterweight champion. In anticipation of Saturday’s bout between Josh Burkman and Steve Carl, who battle to become the promotion’s inaugural 170-pound king, WSOF has released a sneak peek of their 170-pound belt.
While WSOF president Ray Sefo said the up-start MMA organization has been working diligently to create a unique strap, it sure looks an awful lot like the UFC’s hardware.
A.J. LaFons designed the buckle, which features more than 43 carats of genuine ruby, diamond, emerald, sapphire and red garnet. It weighs a total of 10 pounds and 7 ounces.
“We wanted to make sure our championship belt was reflective of our commitment to excellence,” Sefo said. “We’ve been working in the background for more than a year on the design of this belt, and we feel like we got it right.
“On Saturday night, I feel confident that either Josh Burkman or Steve Carl will be proud of the belt they receive as recognition of their accomplishment as our first-ever welterweight champion.”
BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Florida hosts this weekend’s fights. NBC Sports Network broadcasts the main card live starting at 9PM ET/6PM PT.
