In a not so surprising move, particularly since former middleweight champion Anderson Silva lost his crown to Chris Weidman last July, EA Sports announced Monday reigning UFC light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones will grace half the cover of their first UFC video game.
“It’s another one of those surreal moments, one of those moments you just have to step back and pinch yourself and realize I’m not dreaming,” Jones expressed in a statement to FoxSports.com.
Which fighter will stand opposite Jones on the other half of “EA Sports UFC”? That’s up to the fans to decide.
Voting for the second athlete who appears on the video game cover alongside Jones begins today and runs through December 1 at UFC.com/covervote. The official retail cover showcasing both fighters will be unveiled December 28 at UFC 168.
The 16 candidates up for the spot are flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz, welterweight king Georges St-Pierre, middleweight title holder Chris Weidman, lightweight champ Anthony Pettis, featherweight champion Jose Aldo, women’s bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey, Urijah Faber, Benson Henderson, Johny Hendricks, Junior dos Santos, Chael Sonnen, Michael Bisping, Daniel Cormier, Miesha Tate and Alexander Gustafsson.
The Metro PCS-sponsored vote consists of a weekly, round-by-round, head-to-head elimination tournament. Fans can vote as often as they like and double their voting power by using fighter-specific hashtags on “Twitter Vote Thursdays.” Each tweet with the proper hashtag will count as two votes.
“EA Sports UFC” is expected to launch on Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 in the spring of 2014.
