UFC Poster Belfort Henderson Fight Night

“UFC Fight Night: Belfort vs. Henderson” took place Saturday night inside Goiania Arena in Goiania, Goias, Brazil. 

A pivotal light heavyweight shootout between Vitor Belfort and Dan Henderson headlined the festivities. Middleweights Cezar Ferriera and Daniel Sarafian served as the co-main attraction.

Dustin Ortiz Defeats Jose Maria via TKO (Punches) at 3:19 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Maria scores a takedown in less than a minute. He immediately jumps on Ortiz’s back. Ortiz gets to his feet, but Maria is draped all over him. Maria trips him to the mat. Ortiz fights free, then unloads a knee to the groin and time is called. Game on. Maria comes out firing with two big leg kicks. Ortiz takes his back and drags him to the canvas. Maria slaps on an arm-in guillotine after a scramble.

5thRound scores it: Maria, 10-9.

2ndRound: Heavy leg kick by Maria. He follows up with a big left hand. Ortiz connects with a kick to the groin and time is called. Ortiz has been warned. Game on. Ortiz scores a takedown. Decent ground-and-pound by Ortiz. Maria is bleeding from his face. He thwarts a takedown and tries another guillotine.

5thRound scores it: Ortiz, 10-9.

3rdRound: Ortiz immediately, and easily, plants him on his back. Ortiz is pouring it on now. Maria looks too gassed to get to his feet. He gives up full mount. Ortiz is giving him the business. After several hammer fists to the dome, the referee brings the assault to a halt. Maria complained some of the punches were to the back of the head. I don’t know..

Adriano Martins Defeats Daron Cruickshank via Submission (Armbar) at 2:49 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Martins lands a left. He follows up with a couple powerful leg kicks. Martins drops him with a heavy left and pounces. Cruickshank gets to his feet and appears to have recovered. Martins tags him with a one-two combination. He gets Cruickshank to the ground and is working for an armbar. Cruickshank defends it well.

5thRound scores it: Martins, 10-9.

2ndRound: Martins easily takes him down and is methodically going about his attack. Martins goes for a kimura, but Cruickshank fends him off for the time being. Martins goes for a straight armbar and Cruickshank is forced to cry uncle. The official ruling was a kimura, but it was an armbar.

Thiago Tavares Defeats Justin Salas via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 2:38 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Tavares lands a body kick. He continues to beat Salas to the punch. Tavares scores a takedown. Tavares advances to his back, locks in both hooks and locks in a rear-naked choke. It’s a wrap.

Omari Akhmedov Defeats Thiago Perpetuo via KO (Punches) at 3:31 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Akhmedov charges forward, but goes right into a right and falls to the mat. Perpetuo is laying the lumber. Akhmedov appears to have recovered and is to his feet. He’s grinding Perpetuo up against the cage. Perpetuo clobbers him with another right. Akhmedov was wobbly, but dives ahead and scores a takedown. He jumps on Perpetuo’s back and attempts a rear-naked choke. Perpetuo reverses and takes side control. Akhmedov scrambles to his feet and drops Perpetuo with a pair of short right hands. Game over. Crazy fight.

Sam Sicilia Defeats Godofredo Pepey via TKO (Punches) at 1:42 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Sicilia gets him to the ground and lands a big right. Pepey tags him with an upkick. Sicilia isn’t happy and drops three right bombs that knock Pepey silly. The referee immediately stops the fight. Vicious.

Jeremy Stephens Defeats Rony Jason via KO (Head Kick) at :40 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Boom! Stephens drops him with a kick to the face and smacks him once on the ground for good measure. Jason was already out, so the punch on the mat wasn’t really necessary. That’s the clear front-runner for “Knockout of the Night” honors.

Ryan LaFlare Defeats Santiago Ponzinibbio via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: LaFlare catches a kick and takes Ponzinibbio to the canvas. He advances to full mount. Ponzinibbio eats a big elbow. LaFlare tries an armbar, but loses his position. LaFlare scrambles back on top. Ponzinibbio gets to his feet, though eats a right for his troubles. LaFlare drags him back down for a moment.

5thRound scores it: LaFlare, 10-9.

2ndRound: LaFlare shoots for a takedown and gets back position. He knees Ponzinibbio to the body as they fight to their feet. Ponzinibbio looks gassed and the fight is only halfway over. So much for that, Ponzinibbio is charging ahead with a barrage of punches. Only some have connected, but still an impressive burst. LaFlare kills the momentum with a takedown. Interesting round to score.

5thRound scores it: LaFlare, 10-9.

3rdRound: Solid body kick by LaFlare. Ponzinibbio throws an errant back-kick and gets slammed to the ground. They’re back up. Ponzinibbio eats a knee and crumbles to the canvas. LaFalre goes in for the kill, but can’t finish him off. Ponzinibbio is fights to his feet. Crazy chin. He now drops Ponzinibbio. These guys are tired. LaFlare goes for an omoplata from the ground and ends up on top.

5thRound scores it: LaFlare, 10-9, and likely swept the cards, 30-27

Brandon Thatch Defeats Paulo Thiago via Submission (Strikes) at 2:10 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Thatch lands a knee to the face, but is taken down momentarily. Thiago has him clinched against the cage. Thatch folds him over with a knee to the midsection and pounces. Thiago is tapping while Thatch drops bombs. That’s all she wrote. It will be interesting to see if this is ruled a submission or TKO. Thiago is hoping for the prior.

Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante Defeats Igor Pokrajac via Submission (Strikes) at 1:18 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Pokrajac sends him backwards with a right, Cavalcante returns fire with a right of his own. Pokrajac is pressing him against the cage. Cavalcante answers with several vicious knees to the midsection in the clinch. He clocks him with several punches and the scrap is called.

Cezar Ferriera Defeats Daniel Sarafian via Split Decision (28-29, 30-27, 30-28)

1stRound: Sarafian is clinching him against the cage. After a couple of minutes, the referee breaks them up. Ferriera how clinches him against the fence. Sarafian drops to his back and goes for a guillotine choke to no avail. Close one to score.

5thRound scores it: Ferriera, 10-9.

2ndRound: Ferriera secures a takedown and has been laying on top for the past two minutes. The crowd is getting restless. Sarafian gets to his feet and clocks him with a right hand that appeared to stun his opponent. Ferriera gets another takedown to stem the tide. Ferriera was working an arm triangle choke and advancing to side control, but referee Mario Yamasaki inexplicably stands them up. Strange.

5thRound scores it: Ferriera, 10-9.

3rdRound: Sarafian tags him with a straight left. Ferriera responds with a left hand and kick. Sarafian gets a hold of his back. Ferriera scores another takedown. He’s simply too big for Sarafian. Ferriera was active on top, but Yamasaki stood them back up again. No problem, Ferriera immediately lands another takedown. Sarafian is now piggybacking him. Ferriera goes for a rear-naked choke as the final horn blares.

5thRound scores it: Ferriera, 10-9, and likely ran the table, 30-27.

Vitor Belfort Defeats Dan Henderson via KO (Head Kick) at 1:17 in the 1stRound

1stRound: No punches thrown from either fighter in the opening minute. Henderson eats an uppercut and drops to the mat. Belfort is bringing the pain. Belfort comes with a barrage of punches, then unleashes a head kick. Hendo is unconscious on the canvas.
