Fast-rising welterweight star Rory MacDonald was an overwhelming 4-1 odds-on favorite to steamroll veteran Robbie Lawler (pictured) Saturday at UFC 167. Well, there’s a reason why they still fight despite what the Gambling Gods say.
When the dust settled on their back-and-forth shootout, it was Lawler who was awarded a split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) win.
Lawler had him rocked on multiple occasions, but couldn’t finish off the youngster. A couple of times, Lawler decided to follow him to the ground instead of keeping the fight standing. “Ruthless” likely could have ended things if they remained on their feet.
MacDonald will likely be kicking himself for not coming out more aggressive from the jump.
There has been plenty talk about MacDonald eventually challenging teammate Georges St-Pierre for his welterweight title. Between MacDonald’s loss and GSP’s unexpected leave of absence, you can now officially kill that chatter.
UFC 167 took place inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
