On Friday, EA Sports announced Alexander Gustafsson beat out Georges St-Pierre in their fan-voted tournament to score the cover of the “EA Sports UFC” video game. Gustafsson will stand opposite light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who was handed an automatic spot on the cover.
“It’s a thrill and an honor to appear on the cover of the first ever EA Sports UFC game,” said Gustafsson. “I want to thank all my fans who tirelessly campaigned and voted for me. I am proud to have the support of not only my home country, Sweden, and Europe, but also from people all around the globe. This is a huge win that motivates me to become the best light heavy weight fighter in the world.”
GSP beat Chris Weidman, Johny Hendricks and Anthony Pettis to make it to the finals. Gustafsson, meanwhile, took down Daniel Cormier, Miesha Tate and Chael Sonnen on the other end of the brackets.
Voting consisted of a weekly, round-by-round, head-to-head elimination tournament. Fans voted as often as they liked and doubled their voting power by using fighter-specific hashtags on “Twitter Vote Thursdays.” Each tweet with the proper hashtag counts as two votes.
Over 11 million votes were cast in the tournament.
“EA Sports UFC” is expected to launch on Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 in the spring of 2014. The official retail cover showcasing both fighters will be unveiled December 28 at UFC 168.
