‘UFC on FOX: Johnson vs. Benavidez 2’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

“UFC on FOX: Johnson vs. Benavidez 2” took place Saturday night inside Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, California. 

Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson defended his throne against Joseph Benavidez in the show’s featured attraction. Urijah Faber and Michael McDonald met in the co-main event. 

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Alp Ozkilic Defeats Darren Uyenoyama via Split Decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Uyenoyama drags him to the mat with a single-leg. Ozkilic reverses and takes top position. He lets Uyenoyama back up. Uyenoyama nails him with a head kick. Ozkilic secures another takedown. Uyenoyama fights to his feet and lands a couple unanswered leg kicks.

5thRound scores it: Ozkilic, 10-9.

2ndRound: Uyenoyama shoots for another single-leg, but Ozkilic flips him over and ends up on top. They’re back up. Uyenoyama pulls guard. He clocks Ozkilic a few times in the face. They get stood up for inactivity. Ozkilic plants him right back down, then lets him back up.

5thRound scores it: Uyenoyama, 10-9.

3rdRound: Uyenoyama working his kicks. Ozkilic lands a takdown. They’re back up. Uyenoyama unleashed a flying wheel kick to no avail. Fancy, though. Close scrap, but. Looks like Ozkilic is the fresher fighter. Ozkilic gets a takedown. They’re back to a standup affair.

5thRound scores it: Ozkilic, 10-9, and probably won, 29-28.

Abel Trujillo Defeats Roger Bowling via TKO (Strikes) at 1:35 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Trujillo comes out firing. Bowling answers with a left hand. Trujillo goes for a takedown, but is almost caught in a guilloting choke. Trujillo escapes and is unleashing some vicious shots. Bowling is losing the standup battle. Trujillo gets a takedown and is unloading knees into his side. Bowling is getting schooled.

5thRound scores it: Trujillo, 10-9.

2ndRound: Bowling lands a leg kick, but costs him a takedown. They’re back up. Trujillo catches another kick and scores a takedown. Trujillo is raining bombs. Referee “Big” John McCarthy finally brings the mauling to a stop. Interesting Trujillo unleashed that knee to the body just before the stoppage, considering what happened in their initial tango.

Sam Stout Defeats Cody McKenzie via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: McKenzie quickly scores a takedown. Stout gets to his feet. He scores with a head kick. Big body kick by Stout. Stout floors him with a body shot. He tags him with another one.

5thRound scores it: Stout, 10-9.

2ndRound: Less than thrilling standup battle between the two. Crowd getting restless. Nothing much to write about.

5thRound scores it: Stout, 10-9.

3rdRound: Stout really working his jab. He’s the much fresher fighter. Stout is constantly tagging McKenzie in the midsection. There’s a big red mark on McKenzie’s stomach as proof. Crowd cheers that the fight is finally over. McKenzie looked like he didn’t want to be in there.

5thRound scores it: Stout, 10-9, and should sweep the cards, 30-27.

Zach Makovsky Defeats Scott Jorgensen via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: Jorgensen’s hands look sharp early. Makovsky answers with a knee to the midsection. He had Jorgensen’s back for a moment. Solid combo by Makovsky. Jorgensen eats a big left and appears dazed. Makovsky rocks him again, but Jorgensen is still standing.

5thRound scores it: Makovsky, 10-9.

2ndRound: Makovsky gets a body lock and drags him to the mat. Jorgensen catches him in a guillotine and uses it to escape. They’re back standing. Jorgensen gets a takedown. Close one to score.

5thRound scores it: Makovsky, 10-9.

3rdRound: Makovsky slams him to the ground, but Jorgensen immediately reverses. Makovsky now scrambles to top position. He takes Jorgensen’s back momentarily. Jorgensen regains the top spot. They’re back up. Crazy scrambles between the two. Jorgensen’s cut over his right eye. Makovsky takes his back and has booth hooks in. He’s going for a rear-naked choke.

5thRound scores it: Makovsky, 10-9, and likely ran the table, 30-27.

Bobby Green Defeats Pat Healy via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: Green takes his back for a moment. Healy scores with a one-two combo. Green knows he has a significant speed advantage, keeping his hands down in standup battle. Green tags him with a straight right. And follows up with a left. Healy can’t seem to close the distance. He finally gets a hold of Green and takes him down for a brief moment. Green’s speed is the difference thus far. Healy gets a body lock and drags him to the ground for a second.

5thRound scores it: Green, 10-9.

2ndRound: Green waves him on and proceeds to tag him with two unanswered punches. Healy continues to forge forward, though. Green clocks him with a right. He gets a body lock, but can’t take Healy down. Healy now gets a body lock and slams him to the ground. He transitions to his back. Green tosses him off and comes out firing. Healy’s face is bloodied. Healy connects with two rights. Healy starting to grind him against the cage to do work. Green scores a takedown.

5thRound scores it: Healy, 10-9.

3rdRound: Green appears to be slowing, while Healy continues to charge forward. Green wobbles him with a right hand. This fight appears to be up for grabs halfway through final round. Green scores with a combo. He follows up with a left. Healy gets a double-leg and jumps on his back. Green shucks him off and they’re back standing. Healy lands a few punches. Green gets a takedown, and might win a close decision if he can keep him there for the next 20 seconds. Healy reverses and is raining down punches. Healy may have stolen the frame with that late flurry.

5thRound scores it: Healy, 10-9, and may have rallied, 29-28.

Edson Barboza Defeats Danny Castillo via Majority Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-28)

1stRound: Standup affair thus far. Castillo has come up short on a couple of takedown attempts. Castillo drops him with a right and is on the attack. He’s all over Barboza. He gets a takedown and is unleashing a flurry. Barboza is hanging in there. Let’s see if Castillo punched himself out. He takes Barboza’s back, but can’t finish it with a rear-naked choke. He’s in Barboza’s full-guard now. Barboza is gushing blood from his forehead. Looks like Barboza will survive the first round.

5thRound scores it: Castillo, 10-8.

2ndRound: Let’s see if Castillo punched himself out. Barboza lands a spinning back-kick to the stomach. That hurt. The Brazilian starting to find his grove with his kicking game. Barboza drops him with a left hook and he pounces. He slaps on a d’arce choke, but couldn’t finish. It can be argued Barboza won that 10-8.

5thRound scores it: Barboza, 10-9.

3rdRound: Barboza starts things off with a violent leg kick. Castillo answers with a left. Barboza going back to work with leg kicks. Castillo clocks him with a right hand. Spinning back-kick by Barboza. Castillo has been unsuccessful on nine of his 10 takedown attempts.

5thRound scores it: Barboza, 10-9, but the fight might be a draw, 28-28.

Ryan LaFlare Defeats Court McGee via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: LaFlare gets a takedown in under a minute. McGee trying to fight to his feet, but keeps getting put back down. They’re on their feet now. McGee catches a kick and takes him down. LaFlare fights loose and is landing a variety of strikes. McGee lands a kick to the body.

5thRound scores it: LaFlare, 10-9.

2ndRound: LaFlare gets a takedown and is draped all over him. McGee fights free. LaFlare working his jab. This the barn-burner most were expecting. LaFlare secures a takedown. McGee’s face is bloodied.

5thRound scores it: LaFlare, 10-9.

3rdRound: McGee pulls him to the ground and goes for a guillotine choke. They’re back up. McGee gets him down again and is dropping some shots. LaFlare fights his way up. This fight could be up for grabs, as the second round was close. So was the first, for that matter. McGee picks him up and slams him down again.

5thRound scores it: McGee, 10-9, but may have lost, 29-28.

Main Card:


Joe Lauzon Defeats Mac Danzig via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: Lauzon takes it to the ground and is working for an armbar. Danzig fights free and ends up on top. Lauzon has him clinched against the cage. Lauzon gets a takedown with less than a minute left.

5thRound scores it: Lauzon, 10-9.

2ndRound: They’ve been clinching in the center of the cage for the last two minutes. Nothing significant landing for either fighter. Crowd getting anxious. Good combination by Danzig. Lauzon scores a takedown and lands some short elbows. Danzig is bleeding and it’s running into his eyes. Lauzon goes for a last-second armbar.

5thRound scores it: Lauzon, 10-9.

3rdRound: Danzig knows he needs a finish and comes out like it. Danzig starting to find his groove, though it might be too late unless he lands some bombs. Oh well, Lauzon gets a takedown. Lauzon advances to side-control. He’s got Danzig in a crucifix and is raining down elbows. Lauzon moves to full mount and is going for an armbar.

5thRound scores it: Lauzon, 10-9, and should sweep the cards, 30-27.

Chad Mendes Defeats Nik Lentz via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: Mendes unleashing thunder and wobbles Lentz with a left hook. It appears Lentz may have recovered. He tags Mendes with a big leg kick. Mendes scores a takedown. They’re back standing, which might be better for Mendes since he was lighting him up. Another takedown by Mendes. Mendes lets him back up and fires away. He plants Lentz on his back again.

5thRound scores it: Mendes, 10-9.

2ndRound: Mendes connecting with big leg kicks. Lentz is still game. Lentz a tag careless with his attack and gets taken down for a brief moment. Mendes seems gassed for some reason. Lentz tags him with a right. Another takedown by Mendes. Lentz kicks him off. Another takedown by Mendes, but he still isn’t doing anything when he’s on top.

5thRound scores it: Mendes, 10-9.

3rdRound: Lentz charging forward. He hits him with a right and Mendes falls for a moment, but it was tough to tell if it was a slip or from the strike. Mendes briefly trips him to the ground. Lentz kicks to him in the body. Mendes eats a big left. Mendes lands a vicious knee and goes for a guillotine choke.

5thRound scores it: Lentz, 10-9, but Mendes should take it, 29-28.

Urijah Faber Defeats Michael McDonald via Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 3:22 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Faber scores a takedown within seconds. McDonald had Faber’s left arm trapped for a moment. Pro-Faber crowd booing due to inactivity. Booing the hometown hero? Rough. Referee Herb Dean stands them up. Faber catches a kick and lands a left hook. McDonald eats a right.

5thRound scores it: Faber, 10-9.

2ndRound: McDonald takes a kick to the groin and time is called. Game on. Vicious right by Faber. He hurt McDonald and is going for the kill. McDonald appears to have recovered. Faber working kicks now. McDonald grazes him with head kick and thinks he has Faber hurt. Faber answers with a nasty right hook and follows up with several bombs. He slaps on a guillotine choke. McDonald held off for as long as he could, but was forced to cry uncle.

Demetrious Johnson Defeats Joseph Benavidez via KO (Punches) at 2:08 in the 1stRound (Johnson retains UFC flyweight title)

1stRound: “Big” John McCarthy is the third man inside the Octagon. Considering they’ve already fought, lengthy feeling out period here. Johnson floors him with a right and pounces. He unloads several punches to the grill before McCarthy can pull him off. Benavidez was unconscious on the way down, so the shots on the mat weren’t required.
