‘UFC on FOX: Henderson vs. Thomson’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

“UFC on FOX: Henderson vs. Thomson” took place Saturday night inside United Center in Chicago, Illinois. 

Former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson met Josh Thomson in tonight’s featured attraction. Heavyweights Gabriel Gonzaga and Stipe Miocic battled in the co-main event.

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Preliminary Card:

Nikita Krylov Defeats Walt Harris via TKO (Strikes) at :25 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Krylov clocks him with a nasty head kick. Harris is dazed and confused. Krylov goes in for the kill and the assault is brought to an end.

George Sullivan Defeats Mike Rhodes via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Sullivan working his leg kicks early. Rhodes gets a body lock and slams him to the mat. Sullivan quickly works his way to his feet, but Rhodes is draped all over his back. Sullivan scores a brief takedown. Rhodes going for a kimura from his back.

5thRound scores it: Sullivan, 10-9.

2ndRound: Rhodes starting to open things up. Sullivan eats a big right and knee to the midsection. Rhodes connects with a one-two combination. Sullivan answers with a kick. Rhodes gets a body lock, though can’t take him down. Tight round to score.

5thRound scores it: Rhodes, 10-9.

3rdRound: Rhodes might have done enough to win the last round, but probably needs a convincing final frame to win this. He’s coming out with greater urgency. Rhodes landing multiple kicks. He has Sullivan clinched against the fence. Sullivan tags him with an unanswered one-two combo. Not the most thrilling fight the Octagon has ever hosted… Sullivan reverses and is pressing him against the cage. This will be interesting.

5thRound scores it: Rhodes, 10-9, and may have won, 29-28.

Daron Cruickshank Defeats Mike Rio via TKO (Strikes) at 4:56 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Cruickshank comes out firing with a couple kicks. Rio returns fire with a one-two combo. Cruickshank clocks him with an overhand right. He follows up with a powerful leg kick. He drops Rio with a combo and goes in for the kill. Rio is holding on for dear life. Rio was literally saved by the bell.

5thRound scores it: Cruickshank, 10-9.

2ndRound: Rio shoots hard for a takedown to no avail. Rio tries again, but Cruickshank scores the takedown instead. However, Rio slaps on a heel-hook from off his back. Cruickshank escapes and takes top position. They get to their feet. Cruickshank clobbers him with a spinning-heel kick to the face and pounces. He’s giving Rio the business. He’s unleashing a flurry, but the round is about to end. Can Rio get saved by the bell again? Nope. Game over.

Hugo Viana Defeats Ramiro Hernandez via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Viana quick drops him with a right hand. Hernandez bounces right back up. He eats another right for his troubles. Viana is overwhelming his opponent in the standup war. Hernandez hasn’t landed much of anything.

5thRound scores it: Viana, 10-9.

2ndRound: Hernandez comes out with more fire to start the middle stanza. Crowd starting to get restless. Viana is still firing away, but isn’t landing with the same accuracy as in the opening round. Hernandez has fallen back into his shell doing much of nothing again. Boos ring throughout the arena.

5thRound scores it: Viana, 10-9.

3rdRound: Hernandez needs a finish, and he knows it. Viana is landing some very nice counter punches. Hernandez is bleeding from his forehead. Viana appears content with taking a decision here because he’s not looking for a finish. Hernandez mocks him for running around the cage the entire last round. Viana eats a right hand. Too bad for Hernandez he didn’t come out with this kind of aggression earlier. He lands another big right.

5thRound scores it: Hernandez, 10-9, but likely lost, 29-28.

Chico Camus Defeats Yaotzin Meza via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Big leg kick by Meza. Meza shoots and has him clinched against the fence. He finally plants Camus on his back, but Camus quickly reverses. He holds the dominant position for most of the round without inflicting much damage.

5thRound scores it: Camus, 10-9.

2ndRound: Camus lands a right and ends up on top afer a scramble. Meza sweeps to top position. Crowd is booing Meza’s lack of attack. They get stood up. Camus immediately clocks him with a right and follows up with a takedown. Camus transitions to full mount with 90 seconds remaining. He takes Meza’s back.

5thRound scores it: Camus, 10-9.

3rdRound: Camus instantly scores a takedown. He takes full mount with almost four minutes left to play. He takes his back and goes for a rear-naked choke. Meza escapes and Camus is back in full mount. Camus is draped all over him like a wet blanket.

5thRound scores it: Camus, 10-9, and should run the table, 30-27.

Eddie Wineland Defeats Yves Jabouin via TKO (Punches) at 4:16 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Wineland takes the center of the cage and is on the attack. Jabouin isn’t backing down. They trade punches in the pocket –  nothing significant landing for either fighter. Jabouin stuffs a takedown attempt. Close round to score.

5thRound scores it: Wineland, 10-9.

2ndRound: The first two minutes of the middle round is a carbon copy of the opening five minutes. Wineland scores with a solid right hand. He follows up with a right to the body. Jabouin tags him with a head kick. Wineland drops him with a right and follows him to the mat. Wineland locks in an arm triangle choke. He lets the lock go and moves to full mount. Nasty ground-and-pound by Wineland. He transitions to his back. He’s giving Jabouin the business. It’s a wrap.

Alex Caceres Defeats Sergio Pettis via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 4:39 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Caceres with a clear reach advantage, especially since he’s using kicks. Pettis eats a knee to the midsection. They’re trading shots in the pocket, nothing significant landing for either fighter. Pettis kicks him in the face. Solid left jab by Pettis. Caceres lands a one-two combo, but eats another big head kick.

5thRound scores it: Pettis, 10-9.

2ndRound: Caceres drops him with a left and pounces. He’s trying to take Pettis’ back, but Pettis fends him off. It appears as though Pettis has recovered. Caceres takes a right and kick to the face. Pettis nails him with another big head kick.

5thRound scores it: Caceres, 10-9.

3rdRound: Winner of this round takes the fight, IMO. Wild beginning – Pettis gets a brief takedown and lands a head kick on the way back up. Caceres tries a kimura. By far the most exciting fight of the night thus far. Pettis stuns him with a right hand. Caceres starting to win the standup war. He might be pulling away. Pettis fails on a takedown try and ends up on bottom. He goes for a heel hook, though. Caceres takes his back and slaps on a rear-naked choke. Pettis is forced to cry uncle.

Main Card:

Jeremy Stephens Defeats Darren Elkins via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: Stephens catches a kick and lands on top. Elkins does a good job of avoiding anything significant. Elkins fails on a takedown try. Nice right hand by Stephens. Elkins can’t take him down. Big body kick by Stephens.

5thRound scores it: Stephens, 10-9.

2ndRound: Elkins eats a vicious right hand. Elkins shoots for a double-leg takedown, but can’t complete it. He has Stephens pressed against the cage. Elkins lands an overhand right. Stephens stuffs yet another takedown attempt. Stephens kicks him in the head. Elkins returns the favor with a body kick. Powerful uppercut by Stephens.

5thRound scores it: Stephens, 10-9.

3rdRound: Stephens  turns the tables and takes him down, but gets caught in a guillotine choke on the way down. He spins free to his feet. One-two combo by Stephens. Elkins desperately needs a finish. Elkins is going for a Hail Mary guillotine choke, but might be running out of time.

5thRound scores it: Stephens, 10-9, and should run the table, 30-27.

Donald Cerrone Defeats Adriano Martins via KO (Head Kick) at 4:40 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Martins lands a kick to the body. Cerrone is really working his kicks, but nothing devastating. Both fighters trying to figure each other out. Cerrone gets a brief takedown. Cerrone puts him to sleep with a head kick.  Martins immediately went limp. Wow. And there’s your front-runner for “Knockout of the Night” honors.

Stipe Miocic Defeats Gabriel Gonzaga via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: Gonzaga is attacking his legs early with kicks. He clips Miocic with a straight right. Overhand right by Gonzaga. Miocic hasn’t really unleashed anything heavy yet. Big leg kick by Gonzaga. Gonzaga gets a brief takedown.

5thRound scores it: Gonzaga, 10-9.

2ndRound: Miocic coming out more aggressive. He scores with a right and follows up with a leg kick. Miocic stuffs a takedown attempt. Gonzaga connects with a right hook. The crowd is getting antsy. Miocic working his left jab. Gonzaga has slowed quite a bit. Miocic is beginning to pick him apart.

5thRound scores it: Miocic, 10-9.

3rdRound: Miocic stuffs another takedown. Gonzaga is merely a punching bag at this point. Miocic trips him to the ground and is bringing the pain. The crowd is less than thrilled with the action. Miocic appears content with riding out a decision win. Sorry, he’s unleashing heavy hammer fists now. Someone should have told Gonzaga that the fight could go longer than five minutes.

5thRound scores it: Miocic, 10-9, and rallies to win, 29-28.

Benson Henderson Defeats Josh Thomson via Split Decision (48-47, 47-48, 49-46)

1stRound: Thomson ducks under a punch and gets a takedown. He immediately takes his back and locks in a body triangle. Henderson fending off a rear-naked choke for over two minutes. Henderson stands up and is piggybacking Thomson. Thomson releases the body triangle and they are clinching against the fence. Henderson trips him to the mat for a moment. Henderson tries an arm triangle choke.

5thRound scores it: Thomson, 10-9.

2ndRound: Henderson quickly clinches him against the cage. They trade knees. Thomson drags him to the ground and immediately takes his back. Body triangle again. Henderson stands up again and Thomson releases the hold. Henderson tags him with a body shot. They exchange leg kicks. Close one to score.

5thRound scores it: Thomson, 10-9.

3rdRound: Henderson gets a body lock and takes his back. Body shot by Henderson. Thomson may have broken his right hand at some point in the second because he’s not throwing it at all. Thomson falls after landing a body kick and Henderson lands on top.

5thRound scores it: Henderson, 10-9.

4thRound: Thomson gets a takedown in the center of the Octagon. Henderson has him in mission control and is landing numerous punches to the dome. Henderson scrambles to top position. They’re standing and Henderson is draped on his back. Thomson secures a takedown and takes his back with a body triangle. Another tight one.

5thRound scores it: Thomson, 10-9.

5thRound: Nice body shot by Henderson. Thomson takes his legs out from under him with a kick. This is a close fight, but Henderson likely needs a finish to avoid the first two-fight skid of his career. Henderson stumbles to the ground and Thomson jumps on his back. Henderson is clinching him against the cage. Right hook to the body by Henderson. This was a close round to score, too.

5thRound scores it: Thomson, 10-9, and probably won, 49-46.
