Martin Kampmann Could Move Down to Welterweight

Following his first Octagon loss at UFC 88 to Nate Marquardt, Martin Kampmann is seriously considering moving down a weight class to the welterweight division. The loss didn’t prompt the move as Kampmann’s agent Ken Pavia told MMAJunkie, “he’s been considering the move for a while now. He’s a pretty small middleweight.”

Marquardt’s size advantage was evident from the start of the fight, as he landed a flurry of strikes to hand Kampmann his first loss in over four years.

Kampmann was clearly a top-tier middleweight in the UFC and a title shot against Anderson Silva was in his sights if he could’ve gotten past Marquardt, but it appears the size advantage that he gives up to every middleweight fighter in the UFC may be too much.

If he were to move down a weight class, the road to the title certainly wouldn’t be any easier, as the division boasts the likes of champion Georges St-Pierre, Thiago Alves, and Jon Fitch, among others.
