‘UFC 170: Rousey vs. McMann’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

“UFC 170: Rousey vs. McMann” took place Saturday night inside Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. 

Reigning bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey defended her throne against Sara McMann in tonight’s featured attraction. Light heavyweights and recent archenemies Daniel Cormier and Patrick Cummins served as the co-main event.

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Preliminary Card:

Ernest Chavez Defeats Yosdenis Cedeno via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

1stRound: Overhand right by Cedeno. Chavez is having a tough time finding his range early. Cedeno scores with a big leg kick. Cedeno misses on a head kick and Chavez lands on top. Active ground-and-pound by Chavez, as he advances to full mount. He now takes Cedeno’s back, but is running out of time.

5thRound scores it: Chavez, 10-9.

2ndRound: Cedeno misses with another head kick and Chavez slams him on the canvas. If Cedeno can escape from this, here’s some helpful advice – stop with the head kicks… Chavez takes his back, but Cedeno reverses on a scramble. They’re back standing. Cedeno’s pace has considerably slowed. Ceden has been warned twice for grabbing the fence. He’ll be deducted a point next time.

5thRound scores it: Chavez, 10-9.

3rdRound: Chavez has been the aggressor since the opening minutes. Cedeno’s shot gets stuffed. Cedeno is unleashing heavy kicks right now, thought nothing has landed. Chavez eats a big leg kick.

5thRound scores it: Cedeno, 10-9, but likely lost, 29-28.

Erik Koch Defeats Rafaello Oliveira via TKO (Punches) at 1:24 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Koch drops him with a straight left. He’s standing over him and is unloading haymakers to the grill. It’s a wrap.

Zach Makovsky Defeats Josh Sampo via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-27)

1stRound: Powerful single-leg takedown by Makovsky. He lands a right bomb. Sampo is active off his back looking for submissions. They’re back to their feet. Makovsky connects with a knee to the midsection.

5thRound scores it: Makovsky, 10-9.

2ndRound: Another easy takedown by Makovsky. Nothing much to talk about here. Sampo gets to his feet for a moment, but gets planted right back down. No the most thrilling scrap the Octagon has ever hosted. Thankfully, the arena is still like a ghost town.

5thRound scores it: Makovsky, 10-9.

3rdRound: Sampo turns the tables and gets a takedown. He has Makovsky pinned against the cage. Makovsky reverses and will likely ride out this position until the final horn. And I was right.

5thRound scores it: Sampo, 10-9, but probably lost, 29-28.

Aljamain Sterling Defeats Cody Gibson via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Gibson lands a front kick to the face. Gibson scores a takedown, but Sterling fights his way back up. This is by far the most thrilling fight of the night thus far. Sterling jumps on his back and scores a takedown. He’s in Gibson’s full-guard. They’re back to their feet. Sterling has him clinched against the cage.

5thRound scores it: Sterling, 10-9.

2ndRound: They’re trading knees to the midsection in the clinch. Gibson is clinching him against the fence. Gibson trips him to the ground. Gibson jumps on his back, but can’t secure a takedown. The pace has slowed considerably. Gibson gets another brief takedown from behind. Sterling goes for a takedown and nearly gets caught in a guillotine choke.

5thRound scores it: Gibson, 10-9.

3rdRound: Sterling gets an early takedown and is going for a D’arce choke. It looks pretty tight. Nope. They’re back to their feet. Sterling slipped, but Gibson lost the top spot. Sterling has dominant position in the center of the cage. The crowd is already starting with the boos for the evening. Sterling takes his back. He slaps on a rear-naked choke.

5thRound scores it: Sterling, 10-9, and he likely won, 29-28.

Raphael Assuncao Defeats Pedro Munhoz via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: Assuncao charges forward with a combo. Munhoz working leg kicks. Assuncao’s standup looks pretty sharp. They are trading nasty kicks to the thigh. Assuncao has already switched stances a couple times to avoid shots to the leg.

5thRound scores it: Assuncao, 10-9.

2ndRound: Assuncao’s thigh is already purple. He’s strictly southpaw stance right now. He catches a kick and trips Munhoz to the ground. Assuncao lands a couple of bombs. Munhoz spins loose. Assuncao catches another kick and takes him to the ground. Munhoz doing a good job of avoiding damage.

5thRound scores it: Assuncao, 10-9.

3rdRound: Munhoz comes out with a greater sense of urgency knowing he needs a finish. Assuncao tags him with a right hand. And another. Munhoz continues to forge ahead. Munhoz’s face is busted up. Looks like we’re headed for yet another decision.

5thRound scores it: Assuncao, 10-9.

Alexis Davis Defeats Jessica Eye via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Davis pegs her in the thigh to start things off. Eye answers with a one-two combination. Eye connects again as they separate from the clinch. Davis scores with another leg kick. She follows up with a front kick to the face. Eye clinching her against the cage. Eye’s hands look good. Davis secures a late takedown that likely wins her the tight round.

5thRound scores it: Davis, 10-9.

2ndRound: Davis catches a kick and trips her to the canvas. She’s bringing the pain. Davis is smothering her on the ground, but not much damage. Davis working for submissions. Hammer fists by Davis.

5thRound scores it: Davis, 10-9.

3rdRound: Davis is scoring with her hands, Davis needs to get this back to the mat and ride out a win. That opening frame was close before the takedown, so this scrap could be up for grabs. Eye’s hands are far superior. Davis eats a left.

5thRound scores it: Eye, 10-9, but probably lost, 29-28.

Main Card:

Stephen Thompson Defeats Robert Whittaker via TKO (Punches) at 3:43 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Whittaker kicks things off with a solid left jab. Thompson is far quicker, getting in and out after landing his punches. Thompson drops him with a one-two combo. He’s giving him the business on the ground. Game over.

Mike Pyle Defeats TJ Waldburger via TKO (Strikes) at 4:03 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Waldburger lands a good combination. And another. Pyle hasn’t connected on anything thus far. Pyle scores a takedown and lands in side control. Waldburger fights free. Pyle gets a takedown just as the round ends. I still got Waldburger.

5thRound scores it: Waldburger, 10-9.

2ndRound: Waldburger lands two unanswered leg kicks. Pyle catches a kick and falls on top. Waldburger gets to his feet, but eats a right for his troubles. Pyle nails him with a knee to the midsection. Pyle jumps on his back and gets another brief takedown. MacDonald works him to full mount now. Short elbows by Maia.

5thRound scores it: Pyle, 10-9.

3rdRound: Jab and leg kick by Waldburger. Pyle fires back with a right hand. Another clean right hand. And another. Waldburger answers back with two lefts. Pyle drops him with a spinning back elbow. Waldburger appears to have recovered, as he’s clinching Pyle against the fence. Pyle hurts him with another elbow and slaps on a guillotine choke. Waldburger is dazed and confused. Pyle has his back and is laying the lumber. This should be stopped. And referee Herb Dean finally does.

Rory MacDonald Defeats Demian Maia via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: MacDonald stuffs first two takedown attempts, but third time was the charm for Maia. He advances to full mount in the center of the cage with over three minutes to go. Maia landing some solid punches to soften him up for a submission. MacDonald gets to his feet. They exchange leg kicks. Solid one-two combo by Maia.

5thRound scores it: Maia, 10-9.

2ndRound: MacDonald comes out firing. He tags Maia with a head kick. MacDonald thwarts a takedown attempt. And another. MacDonald appears to have hurt Maia with a body kick. Maia’s shots aren’t even close now. It looks like Maia is already completely gassed, or really hurt. MacDonald punching him at-will.

5thRound scores it: MacDonald, 10-9.

3rdRound: Maia looks completely gassed. Body kicks did a number on him in middle stanza. Maia’s shots are telegraphed and slow now. Maia gets a single-leg takedown. If he can hold MacDonald there for the next two minutes, he takes it. Maia dripping ton of blood on MacDonald. MacDonald scrambles loose. Big right by MacDonald. He lands some punches before the horn. This might be close, but I have MacDonald.

5thRound scores it: MacDonald, 10-9, and likely rallied to win, 29-28.

Daniel Cormier Defeats Patrick Cummins via TKO (Punches) at 1:19 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Cummins working hard for a takedown, but eats two big uppercuts for his troubles. Cormier drops him with a barrage. He’s bringing the pain now. That’s all she wrote. Thanks for Cummins, Pat.

Ronda Rousey Defeats Sara McMann via TKO (Strikes) at 1:06 in the 1stRound (Rousey retains UFC bantamweight title)

1stRound: Herb Dean is the third man inside the Octagon. McMann tags her with two big rights. Rousey is clinching her against the cage. Rousey drops her with a knee to the body. She follows up with a couple with punches on the ground. Dean stops the fight. That seemed like a quick stoppage.
