Some pundits inaccurately suggested former light heavyweight top contender Alexander Gustafsson was in a no-win situation entering Saturday’s scrap against unbeaten Jimi Manuwa.
Well, let’s delve deeper into Gustafsson’s mauling of Manuwa. He left England with his 16th professional victory, an extra $100,000 in bonus money, has UFC president Dana White pumping him as “the biggest star in Europe,” and most importantly, next dibs at the 205-pound crown.
Sure seems like the 27-year-old won quite a bit to me.
Gustafsson battered Manuwa with a vicious flurry in the second stanza. A knee to the midsection in the clinch marked the beginning of the end. “The Mauler” then unleashed a barrage of punches to send his opponent to the canvas.
The official time of the stoppage came at 1:18 in the second round.
Gustafsson now advances to either rematch reigning light heavyweight champ Jon Jones or Glover Teixeira, whoever leaves UFC 172 with the hardware.
UFC Fight Night 37 took place inside inside O2 Arena in London, England.
