According to reports, a heavyweight clash between Junior dos Santos and Gilbert Yvel is destined for UFC 108 on January 2nd in Las Vegas, Nevada. Yvel will be stepping in to replace Gabriel Gonzaga who recently came down with a staph infection in his arm.
“The contract is not signed yet, but it’s almost sure he will fight Gilbert Yvel, who is very experienced and loves the striking game,” Dos Santos’ boxing coach Luiz Dórea told Sherdog.com on Thursday evening.
Yvel has won eight of his last nine scraps, mostly against the who’s who-is-this of MMA in Europe. Most U.S. fans remember Yvel for his 3rdRound submission (TO PUNCHES) against former UFC champion Josh Barnett at Affliction “Day of Reckoning” last January. He then earned a 1stRound knockout W over Pedro Rizzo at Fight Force International “Ultimate Chaos” last June in Biloxi, Miss.
Dos Santos, one of the division’s hottest competitors, has rolled off four straight wins of his own, with his last three coming inside the Octagon. The 25-year-old was last seen slapping Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic silly at UFC 103 this past September.
