Very seldom does a sequel match the awesomeness of the original. Sunday’s rematch between former UFC light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson (pictured) and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was no exception.
However, it doesn’t mean Part II wasn’t awesome in its own right.
Henderson was looking every bit of his 43 years of age in the opening two rounds, particularly in the first frame when he was dropped and nearly finished on two separate occasions.
Just when it appeared as though Shogun was well on his way to avenging his unanimous decision defeat in their instant classic, Hendo staged an unexpected rally in the third stanza with his patented H-Bomb.
He floored Shogun with his initial right square on the nose, then blasted him with another one on the exact same spot on the ground. A couple punches to the dome on the canvas and the assault was brought to a halt.
It was a much-needed win for Henderson, as he had lost his past three fights. Coincidentally, his last victory came in November 2011 against Shogun.
UFC Fight Night 38 took place Sunday inside Ginasio Nelio Dias in Natal, Brazil.
