When Wanderlei Silva (pictured) and Chael Sonnen got into a brawl on the set of “The Ultimate Fighter Brazil,” many fans accused the archenemies of staging the unsanctioned scrap to help generate buzz for the reality show.
As it turns out, the scuffle was more than legitimate. UFC president Dana White revealed Wednesday that Silva was injured during their impromptu rumble and that’s what forced an unexpected postponement in his much anticipated bout with Sonnen.
“What happened was, Wanderlei got hurt in that fight,” White said. “He got double-legged on the concrete and he hurt his back. He hurt his hand punching Chael in the head and he got injured.
“He couldn’t fight on time because he got hurt in the fight f****** coaching a show. I’m done being angry now. I was angry when it happened. It’s just disgusting.”
Silva and Sonnen were initially scheduled to headline TUF Brazil 3 Finale on May 24 in Sao Paulo, but the matchup has now been pushed back to UFC 175 on July 5 – assuming, of course, Silva is all healed up and ready to go, which Sonnen isn’t sold on.
White’s announcement probably isn’t what Silva’s fans wanted to hear. “The Axe Murderer” has been out of action nursing various injuries since knocking out Brian Stann in March 2013, and the 37-year-old is now hurt from a minor encounter that lasted just a handful of seconds.
Sonnen is so convinced Silva will back out of their shootout that he’s recently taken to Twitter to request a fight with Rich Franklin.
