All the fighters slated to participate in Friday’s Bellator 118 event tipped the scale Thursday in New Jersey.
A bantamweight interim title tilt between Joe Warren and Rafael Silva (both pictured) headlines tomorrow’s show. Unfortunately for Silva, only Warren will be competing for the hardware.
Silva, who stepped in on short notice after bantamweight champ Eduardo Dantas was forced to withdraw due to injury, clocked 136.9 pounds on the scale today. Athletes can’t weigh more than 135 lbs. for a bantamweight tile affair.
Warren weighed 134.6 pounds.
Therefore, a victorious Warren captures the manufactured crown. If Silva gets his hand raised, he simply adds to his win column but won’t leave with the belt.
“Rafael Silva is a warrior. He was offered this opportunity 3 weeks ago when Dantas was injured. He had a tremendous amount of weight to cut and got incredibly close, but to push for the last two pounds would simply have been medically unsafe,” Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “Another great warrior here, Joe Warren made weight, so the Belt remains in the line for Joe. We always have a contingency plan in place for instances like this, and we are moving ahead with this 5 round fight which should be fireworks.”
Spike.com streams the preliminary bouts live starting at 7PM ET/4PM PT. Spike TV airs the main card at 9PM ET/PT.
Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City hosts Friday’s fights.
