UFC Jake Shields Strikeforce

Rousimar Palhares couldn’t defends his World Series of Fighting welterweight title against Jon Fitch on July 5th to tend to his ailing mother, and the organization was scouring the globe to find an opponent for Jake Shields (pictured) to make his promotional debut in the same event.

Were you able to connect the dots there?

WSOF president Ray Sefo confirmed Fitch and Shields will co-headline WSOF 11 with MMAJunkie.com.

Shields, like Fitch is a fellow UFC castoff, was released by the planet’s premier MMA promotion last month despite having only lost one scrap in his previous five octagon outings. The 35-year-old owns a respectable 29-7-1 (1 NC) overall professional record, but posted a mundane 4-3 (1 NC) mark in the UFC.

Fitch snapped his two-fight losing skid in October with a split decision victory over Marcelo Alfaya. The veteran has gone just 2-3 in his last five bouts.

Lightweight champ Justin Gaethje defends his crown against Nick Newell in the show’s featured attraction.

No word on what venue will serve as host. NBC Sports Network is expected to broadcast the main card.
