Now that Melvin Guillard (pictured) left the Blackzilians, his former teammates have no qualms with fighting him. On Friday, reporter Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting confirmed with World Series of Fighting executive vice president Ali Abdel-Aziz that Guillard will make his promotional debut against prior training partner JZ Cavalcante.
The lightweights will collide at WSOF 11 on July 5.
Guillard signed with WSOF last month after getting released from the UFC. “The Young Assassin’s” best run started in early 2010 when he rattled off five straight wins, finishing off three of those victims in devastating fashion. A UFC lightweight title bout appeared to be on the horizon, but he inexplicably embarked on a 2-5 (1 NC) skid which led to his firing.
He was cut after getting dominated by Blackzilian Michael Johnson in March.
Cavalcante has dropped three of his past five bouts, but posted a TKO victory over Tyson Griffin in August. The veteran was slated to face Justin Gaethje for the inaugural WSOF lightweight title in January, though Cavalcante was forced to withdraw due to an undisclosed injury.
No word on what venue will host the festivities. NBC Sports Network is expected to broadcast the main card.
Gaethje defends his lightweight crown against Nick Newell in the show’s featured attraction. Jon Fitch and Jake Shields serve as the co-main event.
