On Monday afternoon, UFC officials confirmed former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos (pictured) will have to withdraw from his May 31 showdown with Stipe Miocic with a hand injury.
The promotion is currently scouring its roster for a replacement for dos Santos, but it’s possible they could pull Miocic and slide in a new main event.
This marks the second setback for this matchup. The 265-pounders were originally slated to meet at UFC 173, but got pushed back one week after Wanderlei Silva injured his back during a scuffle with Chael Sonnen while filming “The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3.”
Sonnen and Silva now co-headline UFC 175.
This bout was dos Santos’ first scrap since getting steamrolled by reigning champ Cain Velasquez for the second time in three outings. Despite his inability to solve the Velasquez puzzle of late, after knocking Velasquez out in 64 seconds in their initial encounter to capture the crown, “Cigano” remains the second best heavyweight in the game.
Miocic has rattled off two straight wins. The Croatian owns an impressive 11-1 professional record, with his lone blemish coming to Stefan Struve in September 2012.
Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil hosts “TUF Brazil 3 Finale.”
Fox Sports 1 will broadcast the main card live in America.
