Mixed martial arts might be one of the most violet sports around, but very seldom do fighters get carried out of the cage on a stretcher following a scrap. Unfortunately, that’s what happened to welterweight Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 40
The television cameras had turned off and the crowd had cleared U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, but Silva remained on the canvas for nearly 15 minutes receiving medical attention following Saturday’s vicious TKO defeat to Matt Brown in the show’s main event.
The 29-year-old was rushed to a local hospital and didn’t attend the post-fight press conference. UFC president Dana White reported at the presser Silva was being checked for a possible concussion and fractured jaw.
Thankfully, Silva passed all of his tests and will be boarding a plane destined for Brazil Sunday.
“Erick Silva came back with a clean bill of health and can fly home 2 morrow!!!” White tweeted early this morning.
Silva dropped Brown in the opening ticks with a body shot, but it was all down hill for “Indio” from there. Brown rallied and gave Silva the business until the assault was called at the 2:11 mark in the third period.
Silva has now alternated between wins and losses over his past eight outings.
