Jake Shields’ (pictured) World Series of Fighting debut has hit a roadblock. On Wednesday, MMAFighting reported the former UFC welterweight suffered an undisclosed injury that will force him out of his July 5 scrap with Jon Fitch.
It is believed Fitch will remain in the lineup against a different opponent.
The 170-pound tango was slated to co-headline the festivities.
WSOF was initially planning on having Fitch challenge welterweight champ Rousimar Palhares in the event, but the Brazilian opted to tend to his ailing mother instead.
Fitch snapped his two-fight losing skid in October with a split decision victory over Marcelo Alfaya. The veteran has gone just 2-3 in his last five bouts.
Shields, like Fitch is a fellow UFC castoff, was released by the planet’s premier MMA promotion in May despite having only lost one scrap in his previous five octagon outings. The 35-year-old owns a respectable 29-7-1 (1 NC) overall professional record, but posted a mundane 4-3 (1 NC) mark in the UFC.
Lightweight champ Justin Gaethje defends his crown against Nick Newell in the show’s featured attraction.
No word on what venue will serve as host. NBC Sports Network is expected to broadcast the main card.
