After easily disposing of Mark Munoz at UFC Fight Night 41, Gegard Mousasi (pictured) was asked what his future holds. The soft-spoken middleweight’s response had a lot to do with his past, as in a couple of fellow former Strikeforce stars.
Mousasi isn’t calling anyone out, but he believes fighting contenders who are riding winning streaks, like Tim Kennedy and Luke Rockhold, makes perfect sense.
“I’m not interested in them at all, but I think coming from a win, I’m gonna get a winner,” Mousasi stated at Saturday’s post-fight press conference. “So, it’s going to be Kennedy, Rockhold or whoever is coming off a win. And just make it a contender.
“So that’s what I think, I will get one of those guys. But I don’t know, I’m not challenging anyone.”
Mousasi was surprisingly rated only #11 in the UFC’s Middleweight Fighter Rankings heading into his shootout with Munoz, who was pegged at #7. “The Dreamcatcher’s” stock will certainly skyrocket after yesterday’s showing.
Mousasi’s primary concern is taking the shortest path towards a crack at the 185-pound crown. Most of the guys ahead of him have either been issued their next opponents or are coming off losses.
Therefore, Kennedy, who’s rattled off four straight victories, and Rockhold, the winner of two consecutive scraps, make sense. However, Rockhold is currently nursing the broken right toe he suffered in April’s submission of Tim Boetsch.
Kennedy, meanwhile, is awaiting his next assignment after trouncing Michael Bisping in April.
