After UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones (pictured) took a controversial unanimous decision over Alexander Gustafsson, he opted to take on a new challenger in Glover Teixeira instead of granting Gustafsson an immediate rematch.
However, Jones claimed he wasn’t ducking Gustafsson, the only man that has made him look mortal inside the cage, because he would take on Gustafsson after beating Teixeira.
Yeah, about that…
According to UFC president Dana White, Jones now wants to defend his throne against Daniel Cormier next instead of Gustafsson.
“Just to clear up a couple things, people think we’re in contract negotiations with Jon Jones – we’re not. Jon Jones still has five fights left on his contract,” White said on UFC.com. “So what we’re doing right now is trying to get him to sign the bout agreement for Gustafsson. He doesn’t want to fight Gustafsson. … Lorenzo and I have a meeting with Jones on Thursday to get him to sign the bout agreement, and he’s asking to fight Cormier instead.”
Gustafsson has accused Jones of ducking him ever since their September encounter. Jones’ latest about-face will only give “The Mauler” more ammunition.
Cormier earned next dibs at the crown after Gustafsson by dominating Dan Henderson at UFC 173. The first words out of Cormier’s mouth after last month’s win was “Jon Jones.”
Be careful what you wish for.
