Stefan Struve’s (pictured) 14-month hiatus from fighting will have to wait for another day, possibly, forever. Just minutes before the heavyweight was to fight Matt Mitrione at UFC 175, Struve fainted backstage and the bout has been canceled.
“He was hyperventilating. They think it was a panic attack,” UFC president Dana White told media members sitting in press row.
It was reported the 26-year-old is in stable condition, but he’s headed directly to the hospital for further examination.
Struve was scheduled to make an incredible return to the Octagon after being diagnosed with a leaking aortic value and an enlarged heart last August. After undergoing surgery and working relentlessly to resume his career, “Skyscraper” has now suffered another setback.
The Dutchman has won four of his last five bouts, but lost his most recent appearance via TKO to Mark Hunt.
