Now that UFC 176 has officially entered the wastebasket, many of the fights previously confirmed for the August 2 event have found new homes. The most important scrap being the pivotal middleweight tango between Gegard Mousasi (pictured) and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.
UFC president Dana White announced Wednesday via Twitter that the rematch has been relocated to UFC Fight Night Foxwoods.
The September 5 show takes place inside Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut. It is unknown if the middleweight shootout will serve as the show’s main event.
Mousasi is one month removed from disposing of Mark Muonz in Germany. “The Dreamcatcher” has only lost once in his past nine outings.
Souza will be riding a six-fight winning streak into the battle. The former Strikeforce middleweight champion was most recently seen in February posting a unanimous decision victory over Francis Carmont.
Mousasi posted a KO victory over the Brazilian at Dream 6 in 2008.
Mousasi and Jacare were initially slated to co-headline UFC 176. However, the promotion couldn’t locate a viable new featured attraction after featherweight champion Jose Aldo withdrew from his fight with Chad Mendes due to a neck and shoulder injury.
The UFC decided to “postpone” the event yesterday.
No word on whether the UFC Fight Night 50 will be made available for live viewing on UFC Fight Pass, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2 or some combination of the three.
Here is the card’s revised lineup:
